Re: Cheating in chess
Jonathan, It could also be that the statement from Lichess is rather clever, because it is true but people read into it more than it actually says. If there are 40 or 50 people working on cheat detection, then surely it is true that they will have thought of the vast majority of ways people cheat? C...

[quote="Matthew Turner" post_id=263695 time=1618075567 user_id=572] I don't really understand this, the player has zero tournament points, so why do we think he is choosing to lose so many games in a row? My suspicion is that this user has been deliberately losing games...

Re: Look at the space!
Often White's advantage is based on Black's inability to develop their c8 Bishop. So Black playing something like 10....e5 would pose more of a challenge. If you think about how you would attempt to develop that Bishop as Black, it will help you play the most accurate way as White ( not that there i...

Re: Cheating in chess
Let me take this analogy a bit further. The Maths behind the Regan tests and vaccine trials is essentially the same. So there is roughly a 50% chance that a normal chess player (playing without assistance) will play the computer move. Come again? You can see Ken Regan talking about it here https://...

Re: Cheating in chess
The player was breaking the rules, the system caught him and he was flagged. It was an innocent mistake and the player was unaware that they were breaking the rules. What rule do you think the player was breaking? As far as I know there is no rule prohibiting someone from playing against a relative...

Re: Cheating in chess
Roger,
So, what are you proposing? Children under a certain age are not allowed to set up an account? Or that children submit their birth certificate with their registration and then they are allowed to cheat as much as they want?

Re: Cheating in chess
Matthew, I respect your right to disagree but I strongly feel you're wrong. I don't want to bang on about this ad infinitum but perhaps I could give you one real life example of the harm that can be caused. A 7-year-old was playing, quite innocently, online. His mother, a complete beginner at chess...

" Chess.com's fair-play system is thorough, complex and rigorously verified by more than eight years of data from millions of games played by our own members online " Perhaps I can put this to Matthew by way of analogy. Let's suppose he was offered a Covid-19 vaccine which the manufacturers claimed...

Re: Cheating in chess
Matthew, does the following passage from your example give the remotest hint of fallibility? " Chess.com's fair-play system is thorough, complex and rigorously verified by more than eight years of data from millions of games played by our own members online " "Verified", as I am sure you know, mean...

Perhaps it would be better if you quoted what they actually say rather than just making it up.Roger Lancaster wrote: ↑Thu Apr 08, 2021 8:22 pmThat's not quite what I claimed they said, Matthew.Matthew Turner wrote: ↑Thu Apr 08, 2021 8:14 pmExcept nobody from Lichess or Chess.com has ever claimed their algorithms are infallible. Re: Cheating in chess
Still, I find Lichess' attitude to the subject to be too self-congratulatory to be healthy. I couldn't agree more. They should either do the job or stop saying that they do it. A perfectly reasonable response would be "Look, there's a gazillion twats out there. We're doing all we can but with the b...
