Re: Counties and clubs

Trowbridge (Wiltshire) play in the Somerset League I think this is so their players get more games (they play in the Wiltshire league too) Ah okay thanks, well at least its very close to Somerset, so not much travelling involved I assume? Trowbridge play in the Somerset West League, so that's fine,...

Re: FIDE ratings revaluation

Chris, I think you are perhaps not the best example because your ratings are so close to 2000 but if take your 1878 rating then the uplift should be the difference between the rating and 2000 * 0.4

So that would be 122*0.4 = 49 so it looks like it has operated correctly in your case.

Re: Jumping titles

It is impossible to become a GM through the normal criteria without be eligible to be an IM or FM. But you don't have to apply for the lower titles. Most GMs didn't bother with FM, Kramnik went straight to GM. Kramnik went straight to GM did he? I didn't know that. The first time I met Kramnik (In ...

''Niemann's performance is out of this world, but we have no definite proof that he is cheating. We have some indications, but we don't know if anyone wants to report him.'' I'm no legal expert but I suspect that's defamatory enough for HN to take legal action. What are the indications? "Niemann’s ...

Re: Government funding for chess

Government funding of the ECF is great news for Scottish Chess. One only need look at the recent Wood Green International which featured 4 English players and three Scottish ones. More opportunities in England, mean more opportunities for Scottish players. I think one also needs to recognise that go...

Re: Wood Green Invitational 2023

Ian, There is almost certainly a point in the past when I have recommended to Scottish Juniors that they should not offer a draw, because thinking about offering a draw detracts from them thinking about the actual game. I am not aware of that ever being an official policy. Personally, I wouldn't tel...

Re: Tactical Illegal moves

I have seen this happen in real life with a top 100 player playing agaisnt David Bronstein.

I did talk to Bronstein afterwards and I remember saying it was a bit like cricket where there are gentlemen and players. To be honest I am not sure what that means, but I think he sort of did :)
