Re: Takeback requests in online games
why is online any different? Because there are mouseslips and fingerslips in online, they happen to everybody at every level and there is no real equivalent OTB. Tough old world ain't it, we are all subject to the same mistakes, personally if I'd slipped with my mouse I wouldn't ask to take a move ...

Re: Takeback requests in online games
I always turn it off where possible - I used to fall for it quite a bit on the old ChessCube, where I'd just click ok in the middle of a 3 minute game, not realising what it was and next news is my opponent would have his lost queen back on the board. Idiotic thing to have on any Chess site in my op...

Re: Ginger GM Collection Sale
Simon Williams is a great chess teacher. I've seen some of his You Tube videos and enjoyed his game against Lancashire's Martyn Hamer. Yeah don't get me wrong I like Simon, his blitz death match with Ben Finegold was really entertaining. There's one part where Simon draws or looses an ending 3 pawn...

Re: Briish Championship Congress 2021
Yeah it's not the nicest place in the world but it will be very nice for people living up North to play in a British and not have to travel the length and breadth of the country, I will be taking a week off work for that one.

Re: Ginger GM Collection Sale
I wouldn't trust the analysis on some of the earlier ones, when I think of the grading points I’ve lost trying to play that Winawer - Ginger GM says we have a good attacking game here and the computer gives me a position the equivalent of a piece down  Harry the H pawn can F right off. They did...

Re: Closing Gambit
Yeah this is free on Prime video at the moment if you missed it, I can recommend it's very interesting.
There is plenty of Ramondo screen time, but justified here as he was Korchnoi's second at least.

Re: Queens Gambit and Netflix
Check out Danny King's videos on YouTube. I find those Danny King videos a bit straw-clutching myself "Judit Polgar is the Real Beth Harmon" ... Why Danny, cos she's a woman? I don't see too many other similarities  But I know how much extra advertising revenue that title will get from all th...

Re: Queens Gambit and Netflix
I can't help admiring how Mr McCready is prepared to stand alone - against both the chess and non-chess world - in his dislike for The Queen's Gambit. I'm sort of with him. But since I suspect it would annoy me, I have taken the precaution of not watching it. Perfectly fine with people not liking i...

Re: Queens Gambit and Netflix
Maybe you are right, I suppose in hindsight when I was 13 my favourite thing was acquiring any slasher film I could lay my hands on, on VHS. Didn't do me any harm like... now where's my hockey mask  In a totally unrelated topic I've just realised the bloke who plays Benny Watt's is the odd loo...

Re: Queens Gambit and Netflix
Series discussed on Breakfast TV this morning (Tuesday). Suitability for younger children mentioned. There were a few unsavoury references to under age sex mentioned in the novel - Jolene and the orderly Fergusson were described as "being kind to each other" and at one point Beth and Jolene have a ...

Re: The Queen's Gambit by Walter Tevis (Netflix adaptation)
This was one of my favourite books of all time (I’ve read it at least 6 times in my life) I binged watched the series last weekend and I have to say apart from a very few changes, the adaptation is almost word for word from the novel and was absolutely wonderful. Just finished the book; very good Y...

Re: Ian Thackray
On the Yorkshire Chess Association website. The Steve Mann tribute under notices mentions is age was 49 when he passed away. Ian was born on the 25th August 1971. Was he really? He was very boyish looking was Ian, it must have made his age deceptive to me. Still no age to go at all, very horrible y...

Re: Ian Thackray
My god what a shock! I knew Ian quite well at one time (though we hadn't been in touch for few years due to my hiatus from the game) and we would have a pint and a chat on a Saturday afternoon, at the local pub we both lived quite near, after we had finished our match in the Yorkshire League. A ver...
