Re: Media comments on chess

I went to back to 'The Pawn' in Alexandria. Three hours there and three hours back on my bus pass. Just to have my picture taken and a pint. (nice pint, £3.20). https://www.redhotpawn.com/imgu/blog/1/b4u437199-1554847836.png https://www.redhotpawn.com/imgu/blog/1/b4u437199-1554847869.png https://www...

Re: US Championship 2019

Hi Nick, Yes that was a nice piece of chess. It looked there was so much to go wrong with that. White has 33.f6+ (which was played) or 33.Rxd6 first but it all works. The game finished in a rather unique way. S. Sevian - T. Gareyev, USA Ch, 2019 (round 4) 6k1/8/8/8/8/1K6/4pBr1/4R3 w - - 13 67 White ...

Currently watching 'Only Connect' on BBC2 the team The Durhamites is captained by George Twigg who was
introduced to us viewers as a very keen chess player. Currently they are getting beat by The Poptimists. 7-0.

Re: HISTORY OF THE LAWS OF CHESS

Hi Stewart, This may be of interest to Shaun, Tim mentioned the Italian rules in his post. https://www.chesscentral.com/discart-bonetti-chess-match-1863-download-e-book/ Discart-Bonetti Chess Match, 1863 Here is your chance to experience chess as it used to be - or might have been! Re: Winning against both Capablanca and Fischer

OOPS! It was England. (could have been played in Vienna with an English opening.) Thank you. For a few years C.G. had a sixth player. Reuben Fine who beat Fischer one on one and had him beating Capablanca in a 50 board simul. But Edward Winter revealed that Fine was part of a Manhattan Chess Club co...

Re: Winning against both Capablanca and Fischer

Threw the original question: Wins against both Capablanca and Fischer to the crowd at Chessgames.

We have a fifth. The Canadian Maurice Fox (1898-1988)

He beat Capa in a simul in Vienna in 1919 and Fischer in the Canadian Open in 1956.

Hi Roger,

(OOPS!)

I have a rule of thumb.

Never resign or accept an offered draw if you have a check in the position.

Re: Media comments on chess

Last night (actually to be more precise it was very early this morning) I watched 'The Killing' a 1956 Stanley Kubrick film. It has a chess scene in it with Kola Kwariani (a wrestler and chess player). In the scene an argument breaks out about whether or not a Rook can be won. One player is called a...

Re: Chess Book Collections

Hi Brian, It is a strange coincidence, a Morra and the opponent's name was 'Mills'. I have "Chess Treasury of the Air" but I never used that as the source. Heather Lang told me a Mills and Boon book was out there with her name. https://pictures.abebooks.com/isbn/9780263748581-uk.jpg But it was not h...
