Re: Media comments on chess

"...American Football is an open-air chess game disguised as warfare. There is a lexicon of 'plays' known to any decent footballer, as premeditated as the Ruy Lopez opening, the Petroff Defence, The Sicilian Defence, The Muzio Gambit, The Queen's Gambit Declined." Broadcast 9th January 1971. from th...

Re: Quit Stallin'

Hi Jonathan, The writer did mention 9.Qd2 winning but it was too late. Not actually a resignation (or was it?) he (Jerry Hanken) was playing a computer and after 8...Qg5+ switched it off in disgust and then spent the next hour refraining from jumping up and down on it. Finally, In his words, He let ...

Re: Quit Stallin'

Hi James, People browsing and then hunting online for the book is probably the main culprit. I always try to get to a few things, mostly from the bargain box at the Edinburgh Congress. If I want a new book, which can be pretty expensive, I'd buy it in the flesh, I dislike shopping online. I cannot b...

Re: Media comments on chess

Hi Mathew, They were close, The 1938 Championship was held in Brighton and Fairhurst was the 1937 'defending' champion but he did not play in 1938. Cannot find an Alexander game opening with 'his customary 1.d4' he was a 1.e4 man. ( a few 1.c4's) He faced only one French Defence in that tournament v...

Re: Media comments on chess

HI Nick,

Yes if it's genuine and Sotheby's and no mugs at valuation then yes it could go for silly money.

They will need proof it was part of the original haul but even then it is still valuable.

Re: Media comments on chess

Hi Alex, This will put them back in the headlines again and I may get another invite for the radio! Opening shot for my radio interview: Like the site of John Knox's House, the blood of Rizzio on the steps at Holyrood Palace, the tale of Greyfriars Bobby this is yet another Edinburgh myth. That shou...

Re: Media comments on chess

Hi Justin, Interesting link. I once played a league game with those board and pieces.. A pawn was missing we used a 10p piece. A Rook was missing, we used a match box. You have not played chess till you have castled with a match box. (I won!) https://i.guim.co.uk/img/media/40b319ece658e2f8c551189451...

Re: Carlsen, Anand and Ding Liren to play in the UK

Hi Mick and Mark, (and Mike!) It was a business promotion event, a showpieces where they used chess players instead footballers or minor celebs. A flat across the board appearance fee to turn up and play chess to promote whiskey. Carlsen won 250 bottles of whisky! It also raised the profile of chess...

Re: Carlsen, Anand and Ding Liren to play in the UK

Hi John, I often speak to Ian Rankin in my job, we share the occasional joke. Not yet mentioned his chess bit in 'Beggars Banquet.' A collection of short stories, the one titled 'Castle Dangerous. ' He says that Rebus knew the chess player's motto: 'If in doubt, play a pawn.' which is the last thing...

Re: Carlsen, Anand and Ding Liren to play in the UK

Hi Apparently just after I left Ding Liren and Karjakin both gave off the cuff skittle simuls and Carlsen, after a lecture, posed for pictures. A good time was had by all. By all accounts it was a business venture backed up by Russian money. (Nepo was meant to be there but as stated Karjakin took hi...

Re: Carlsen, Anand and Ding Liren to play in the UK

Hi Mike, Of course I do not drop all the pearls into one post. The charming village of Newburgh which is one minute away from the Abbey is getting Is getting a 2nd visit next week. Everyone said 'Good Morning' - 'Good Afternoon.' (I was thinking they had me mixed up with someone else and was hoping ...
