Re: Todays Chess Quest.

Hi Mr. Barden. I'm inclined to go along with it as I cannot see a valid reason why Kapengut would mention it. Him and Tal were friends. " Kapengut was transferred to the Baltic Military District for the remainder of his military service. No sooner had he arrived in the Latvian capital than he took p...

Re: Media comments on chess

"It is named after the founder's children, Charlie & Jessie = Chess."

Does that mean if the children were named Luke and Doris it would be called Ludo Telcom.

Re: Todays Chess Quest.

Hi Mr Barden, I also thought after looking at the game that the story is true but it must be a different game. Hi David, Najdorf was a great mid game talker. His games autobiography is littered with anecdotes from him discussing positions. There is little doubt this kind of thing went on and I suspe...

Re: Todays Chess Quest.

Hi Roger, We, at the moment, only have the information the source link gave. Sadly no move number. As you might suspect from my first post I was sceptical but came around to accepting it. I cannot see what anyone has to gain from fabricating such a tale. Before posting I thought I would spot the sho...

Todays Chess Quest.

Hi, 'Apparently' (I was not there so cannot vouch for the absolute truth but I do believe it. It came from Albert Kapengut ) In the Round 3 game between Tal and Stein at the 1964 Amsterdam Interzonal the players agreed a draw before play began. During the game the players were going through the moti...

Re: Media comments on chess

Hi Justin, No reference form Dawkins. The bibliography list nobody I recognise chess wise. He does cite a J. Maynard Smith; "Game Theory and the Evolution of Fighting." but whether or not he got the chess bit from there I do not know. Hi Stewart, Agree there will always be chess games amongst humans...

Re: Media comments on chess

Hi, I've been thinking... Chess openings are evolving all the time. One day when computers have solved chess we will be left with just one opening. The survival of the fittest. Seems this idea was also considered back in 1978. Page 61 of 'The Selfish Gene' by Richard Dawkins. https://www.redhotpawn....

Re: Chess & Bridge Withdraw Ray Keene's Book from Sale

The really annoying thing is RDK is not a hack, when he wants to he can write in an entertaining and instructive manner. Having said that in a way it is what this match deserved. The worst ever W.C. match gets a chess book covering it that is pulled off the shelves and to be pulped. (I want a copy!)...

Hi Tim,

Good Blog, you say this is the 30th consecutive time of playing in the congress over New Year. Is this a record for Hastings.

Re: Prize Money is Out of Control

Nakamura, Aronian and MVL played in Gibraltar last year, 10 rounds first prize £25,000. Fair enough. A good event. My main beef is the money the 'Fantastic Four' got in the London Classic for two games only against the same opponent and then onto the cartoon Mickey Mouse chess. Gibraltar 2018 was wo...

Re: Prize Money is Out of Control

Hi Andrew, "..receiving what you think is an obsessive amount of money " I am not alone. I am just the loudest....the whinniest. Obviously some people think it's OK that the 'Fantastic Four' got the money they did. Some do not. (it's probably a grading thing...look how high their rating is....they d...

Re: Prize Money is Out of Control

Hi Andrew, I'm way ahead of you. The letter has been drafted. Dear Sir, Please give me £250,000 so I can give it to four chess players who you have probably never heard of. They will play two normal games of chess then some speed chess. The whole thing should take 6-7 days. I will nickname them the ...

Re: Prize Money is Out of Control

Hi Joey, I dislike comparing chess with other sports. It's completely different. A famous game of football was England beating West Germany 4-2 in 1966. A famous boxing match was the 'Rumble in the Jungle' between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in 1974. The most famous game of chess was played betw...

Re: Media comments on chess

Hi Keith, No problem, thought you had missed the gist of the post. Was looking for something that is more common now in OTB games than it was 20 years before increments. There might be more KRB v KR endgames but that can hardly be bad for the game. I was not sure what I was looking for but something...

Re: Media comments on chess

Yesterday on 'Fifteen to One' a contestant was told a question mark signifies a bad move in chess notation,
he was then asked what signifies a good move. The answer given (an admitted guess) was an asterisk.
