Re: Media comments on chess

They missed the chance to say one of her pawns might promote to a new Queen. I see 'stalemate' has been misused again. You cannot have an ongoing stalemate. Stalemate means the game is over. If we still go in March get ready for all the panic buying, which in some parts of the UK has already started...

Re: Christmas Picture Puzzles

Hi John,

Re: Prize Money is Out of Control

Hi Justin, "To rephrase, is there any particular reason to think that it increases when there is more or decreases when there is less?" Or does it decrease when there is more and Increase when there is less. I've no idea, but I brought up the possibility of temptation so I'll give a go. I'd be very ...

Re: Christmas Picture Puzzles

Hi Michael,

Figured a jest. (can you think of a player with B.W.)

Met Bob in my early 20's, don't think I called him Bob either. I would have opened with Mr. Wade.

Re: Christmas Picture Puzzles

Hi Michael, You are nit-picking, Bob Wade is actually Robert Graham Wade. I could not put RGW on the trunks. Everyone called him Bob - even you. https://www.ecforum.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=8245&p=176756&hilit=Bob+Wade#p176756 B.H. Wood is correct, everyone uses that, but I could not think of anot...

Re: Prize Money is Out of Control

Hi Jack, Well done, the cheque is in the mail. Hi Justin, "Do we have any evidence that collusion in sport is particularly linked to the quantity of money available?" Are you talking sport in general. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_match_fixing_incidents Or just Chess and collusion. https://e...

Re: Christmas Picture Puzzles

Hi John, Loathed having to correct it. I'm of the publish and be damned school but it had to be done. (I could have wriggled and said it was part of the Quiz. 'did you spot the deliberate mistake?') Worked for years next to a New Zealand girl who had a New Zealand flag displayed on her monitor, So k...

Re: Prize Money is Out of Control

Hi John, "I'd like to read Geoff's take on the Tiger vs. Phil match." One cannot compare chess to any other sport. Nor do I care about money in other sports. Scotland has to go threadbare cap in hand to plead for a pittance of a grant and some loser (coming 4th in a four man event is a loser.) gets ...

Prize Money is Out of Control

I am of course about to lay into the London Classic four player event and the ridiculous prize money. 1st $120,000 2nd $ 80,000 3rd $ 60,000 4th $ 40,000 Some ham could have lost every game and walk away with $40,000 (that is now impossible and the draws have already started to pile up.). The total ...

Re: Christmas Picture Puzzles

Ha Ha...New Zealand. No wonder they were mumbling and grumbling.

Suppose I'd better fix it. (nobody else has noticed - thank you Mr. Barden.)

Re: Under promotion to a bishop.

Recall Ray Keene under promoting to a Bishop to see if what publication actually got it right. I think he was writing in CHESS at the time. Later at chessgames Ray said it appealed to his sense of humour D. Yanofsky - R. Keene, Olympiad 1974. 8/6bk/6pp/p2qN3/5P1P/2Q5/p6K/8 b - - 1 48 Ray played 49.....

Re: Media comments on chess

Hi Jonathan, Thank You. I knew there must be some knocking about but it was just a ' by the way' moment, was hoping to find a few to store for a rainy day when someone messes one up and I could find a nigh identical position of Keith's to say this is how it should be done OTB rather use TB analysis ...
