Re: Penalty for illegal move: 2018 FIDE revision

Never quite liked that extra two minutes for the first illegal move in blitz. Down to last few seconds, you know there is mate on but cannot quite see it. Make illegal move. Whilst clocks stopped, players summons arbiter who then farts about the the clock you get extra time ( possible as much as a m...

Re: Media comments on chess

A few frames from the recent Beano in question. I was a bit stunned to see it priced at £2.50.

Re: Surprise discovery in laws of chess

Hi Roger, ..."If you read tournament reports from the 1970s, you sometimes see references to players misbehaving by keeping their fingers on the buttons." I recall reading about Botterill v Mecking in a 70's CHESS. I found this. 'The Bandit of the Chessboards' “In the game Botterill - Mecking Hastin...

Re: Chess Behind Bars

Edward Winter has a piece about the topic title: 'Chess Behind Bars' concerning Jim Phelan. http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/extra/phelan.html The link mentions a brief chapter on chess at Parkhurst from The Chess Player’s Bedside Book by R. Bott and S. Morrison which per chance I only finished re...

Re: Media comments on chess

Someone recently commented on the misuse of the word 'stalemate'. Just finished reading 'The Discovery of the Bismarck' by Robert D. Ballard. Excellent. Chess terms pop up from time to time usually with the Royal Navy adding more pieces to the board by diverting more ships to the chase. Alas on page...

Re: Robots and chess: Letter to 'The Times' 8 Dec. 2017

Of course he is wrong. if he is right then the old Masters, especially Greco were better chess players than todays players. (what games did he/they memorise to produce their combinations.) and we know that is not the case. We recall patterns and ideas from other games and have a fair understanding o...

Re: Media comments on chess

"This is more a game of chess than draughts."

Page 217. 'Uncle John's Great Big Bathroom Reader', Portable Press, 2003.

"The board game Draughts used to be known as 'Chess for Ladies'."

I know in some countries Draughts is called 'Dames' but I've never heard it called chess for ladies.

Re: Another one for the arbiters

Hi, Pity no more details, did the missing piece affect the actual result. Right away I thought of Steiner - Colle 1926 (could not recall where) Steiner knocked his King on h1 off the board and replaced it on g1. Steiner went onto to play a Queen winning combo that would have been unsound if the Whit...

Re: What do I do?

The card and poster is good, perhaps a chess piece attracts more attention.
And have contact on display and possibly the address where it is.
