Re: The Daily Mail & chess?

Hi John, Read review. Thought the cover was a bit bland but paying Netflix to stick Beth Harmon on the cover would have stretched the Mail purse strings. (Play Like Beth vid's are out there, even a Beth app.) I too pine for the paperbacks. 'Chess Mind' by Abrahams & 'Middle Game' by Kotov and Keres ...

Re: Chess references in Films

I recently watched the 1966 Thunderbirds Movie. Brains playing (I say Virgil wife says Scoot) at chess. https://www.redhotpawn.com/imgu/blog/1/b4u437199-1618957550.png Plot: (in a nutshell) Men are sent to Mars. They see something that looks interesting so being human they blast it with a high power...

Re: The Daily Mail & chess?

Hi John, Not quite what you are looking for but Olimpiu G. Urcan found a few Daily Mails pieces from the 1920's and 30's Capablanca, Euwe, Sultan Khan...Elaine Saunders. Interesting reads. https://www.chesshistory.com/winter/winter109.html#CN_8193 Some enterprising chappie from here should write to ...

Re: The Daily Mail & chess?

Hi John, Nothing comes to mind but do give 1972 a look. Every paper jumped on the Fischer-Spassky band wagon. Even The Sun had a chess bit explaining the rules and moves. Also do a google for 'Daily Mail + Chess' and you find loads of goodies. Someone offering £250 an hour for chess and maths lesson...

Re: Cheating in chess

Hi Nick, I did not say that, I was answering a quote from Joseph Conlon. https://www.ecforum.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=7324&start=2565#p264104 I agree, it's nigh impossible or very difficult. As for becoming dependant on a computer, well there is the rub. If a weaker player has got themselves up to...

Re: Cheating in chess

Hi Roger, Sorry, I was thinking of RHP where you can play in 20 player tournaments with both colours (38 games at once) You have 21 days for all moves. If you see a player you suspect or just do not want to play you resign. No problem with sandbaggers as the tournament is open to all grades 500 - 25...

Re: Cheating in chess

Hi Justin, "On principle I try to keep down your word count." :) Now that I can understand. Today at 14:00 I will be picking up my Aitken books so I'll be off air for a month or two. Aitken seemed to love Rook endings, I'm pretty sure from the games I've entered some it has rubbed off a few months a...

Re: Cheating in chess

Hi Justin, Please try to quote me in full: " So we posted if you think someone cheated, never play them again and if you get drawn against them in a tournament resign on move one." So if you the player suspected a cheat then there was a solution. Never again. Players can PM each other trading names ...

Re: Cheating in chess

Hi Joseph, When I was in the Red Hot Pawn cheat tracing club (at one time that place was Red Hot Paranoia.) We mooted the idea of creating 6 engine accounts. The idea being it would easily find a human computer user. and should anyone beat one of them then we have proof. I was licking my lips at the...

Re: Chess references in Films

I watched The House on 92nd Street (1945) a film cum documentary apparently based on a true incident. Secrets are smuggled out of an American scientific laboratory but the FBI have no idea as to the how or who. They then learn one of the technicians they suspect can hold 14 games of chess in his min...

Re: Cheating in chess

Hi Justin. It's not me that keeps brining him onto the forum and posting his games. I'm actually doing my best, in my own sweet way, to say there are more important matters regarding the title of the thread than this poor misunderstood lad. (I also feel uncomfortable every time I see his name. '1963...

Re: Alex McFarlane is on the mend.

Hi Alex, I'm a good guy. I always leave the door ajar for sticklers to pass through. That was a great event, It was won by Ian Gourlay. https://web.archive.org/web/20100102024656im_/http://www.chessedinburgh.co.uk/chandlerimages/iantrophy.jpg But much important, Angus MacDonald won the 'Chandler How...
