Re: WHO'S GOING TO TORQUAY?
Stuart
Talking about eye-catching events.
You were probably informed when you visited that the 'big wheel' had gone ,as the suggestion apparently was to play chess on this attraction - well it is now back and operating , just in case you were interested.

Re: Flagfall at time control
As one of the arbiters at the time,I feel that Rob has hit the nail on the head with his conclusion. He approached me along with his opponent and stated what had happened.Rob didn't make a claim as he said he hadn't seen the flag fall and didn't know if it had fallen due to the clock being banged ( I...

Re: Coaching juniors
Thanks to all for the advice Richard, Just for information, I taught children for about ten years with a fair amount of success, after being encouraged by an old friend of us both Mike Fox,so I have him to thank for my now re-kindled enthusiasm, he got Tony Miles to 'bully' me after I helped out at ...

Coaching juniors
Good afternoon all. Probably against my better judgement, as I have God knows how many roles (arbiter, grader, captain, fixtures secretary etc) I am about to get back into coaching juniors. I gave this up about 7 years ago when work commitments meant I couldn't dedicate the required time to it. Howev...

Re: Time to get Chess back on TV?
As for a presenter, from what I have seen of Andrew Martin - would we need to look any further ?
An expert who would satisfy those of us who play the game and a persona to keep those who tune in out of 'curiosity' interested.

Re: Grading Prize given to ineligible player
Chris Although the situation at the said congress didn't actually occur, the possibility was certainly there, as Rob Thompson inadvertantly pointed out. Thankfully in the circumstances, had they occured as was first reported, the organiser of this particular event would have seen it as a genuine err...

Re: Grading Prize given to ineligible player
Rob, No problem, understandable mistake, by Jeff as there was a rush to give out prizes before everyone disappeared and there was some confusion as to who was eligible for what (u14) , (u16) etc. At least his phone didn't go off this time. Two weeks ago his phone went off about 2-3 minutes after he ...

Re: Grading Prize given to ineligible player
As for arbiters cheecking it out the grades, it is good practice, but not when a controller doesn't turn up and you are trying to run both the open and the major with one controller !!. With a late start and 20 minutes between rounds it does not exactly leave a lot of time . It can be a pretty thank...

Re: Grading Prize given to ineligible player
Jeff entered late(on the day) and was taken at his word.Which undoubtably was genuine as far as he was concerned. As there was a flood of late entries the organiser was under a lot of pressure, especially as the controller for the juniors didn't bother to turn up and he would not have had the time t...

Re: Death of a congress ?
In reply to Seans question 114, still well below break even , but not as bad as it could have been. At the risk getting egg on my face, should some of the new proposals go through I feel that entries will be much improved at next years event(cue-dons tin hat , ducks and prepares himself
)

Re: Death of a congress ?
David, just to let you know that thanks(seemingly) to the publicity that was generated, the entries improved and although the congress made a bigger loss than last year it wasn't terminal and are things are certainly looking up. A lot of changes are about to be made, but rest assured the congress WI...
