Re: Beta XML Interface

Just out of interest, what would you be using it for? I actually have the ECF grading data in my online chess match results site, and I was curious to see how the drupal soap service module worked, so I set one up. The php code you would need to access it is below... If anyone is interested, we cou...

Re: Beta XML Interface

What is the status of this SOAP interface? I can access the test server (e.g. to fetch a list of club names), but I'm not getting any results back for individual players. If this was put live can you provide the URL/URI? Still hasn't gone live, probably because a lack of use / demand. It's nice to ...

Re: question for you all

10.1 A `quickplay finish` is the phase of a game, when all the (remaining) moves must be made in a limited time. B1. A ‘Rapidplay’ game is one where either all the moves must be made in a fixed time from 15 to 60 minutes; or the time allotted + 60 times any increment is from 15 to 60 minutes. R...

Re: question for you all

But this is a quickplay finish, does appendix B5 not apply?
B5. The arbiter shall make a ruling according to Article 4 (The act of moving pieces), only if requested to do so by one or both players.
When we discussed 10.2, it was confirmed that B7 applies to quickplay finishes.

Re: Lowenthal Trophy

Thanks to David Sedgwick, I googled "Mike Conroy" and was able to find some photographs of the Lowenthal Trophy on the ECF website. Here is the best one: http://www.bcf.org.uk/assets/images/c-champs_05/trophy.JPG Nice photo, fantastic trophy! It is obviously the same trophy that Edward Tandi provid...

Re: Imperial Chess Club Tournament 1927

In other words, the British Empire Club Tournament is what he already has. It is the Imperial Chess Club Tournament that he needs to learn more about. Apologies, I must have read through it too quickly. Out of curiosity, is the Keene book, Keene's own research conducted by trawling through old news...

Re: Lowenthal Trophy

It was the English County Trophy:

It was probably lost in the big one of September 1940:

Re: Imperial Chess Club Tournament 1927

It just so happens that I have a book titled "London 1927" British Empire Club Tournament, by a certain Raymond D. Keene. It has the games in it. Good photos too.

Re: ECF Game Fee v Membership

Last season there were 201'459 standard play games and 259'117 rapidplay games included in the grading. Unfortunately, these numbers are not broken down by season... I don’t know where these figures are from, but they don’t look right. Standardplay games always far outnumber Rapidplay in the gr...

Re: ECF Game Fee v Membership

But this will distort the grading system, probably resulting in some inflation, because it is most likely the weaker players who will avoid membership. And what if player B is ungraded? More complication.. If player B is ungraded, its no different under this scheme than it is under game fee. It's d...

Re: ECF Game Fee v Membership

Thanks for clarifying what you do regarding grading. But say player A has ECF membership and player B does not, what would be the outcome of A vs B? Would player A's grade be adjusted?? At the moment, if the event is a "regional special" (that is an event which doesnt pay game fee but is held in an...

Re: ECF Game Fee v Membership

I'll stick my head above the parapit on this one also. ... Let me deal with some of Edwards points :- IMHO, the introduction of a membership fee just complicates things. The way chess is organised today, a chess player will join one or more clubs, pay the clubs membership and the clubs in turn pay ...

Re: ECF Game Fee v Membership

Well, someone has to stick their head out. IMHO, the introduction of a membership fee just complicates things. The way chess is organised today, a chess player will join one or more clubs, pay the clubs membership and the clubs in turn pay the Leagues. The Leagues then pay the ECF grading fees. This...

Re: New Grades

Unfortunately the spreadsheet does not show the number of games played... For what it's worth, the CSV file does contain the number of games considered in the calculation: Cat Games Players Per-Player (rounded) A: 90325 1911 47 B: 39688 1647 24 C: 36079 2449 15 D: 24394 2433 10 E: 10190 1821 6 O: 7...

Re: New Grades

Wow, the 50th percentile, which used to be 110 is now raised to 135.

More interestingly, the distribution curve is more peaky -see the diagram (attached):
