Re: FIDE Cooperation Agreement with Coca-Cola

John

Thank you for asking, but I won't be taking up your offer to play this particular game. I'm sure if you want to find a more ethical company than Coca Cola you can do so yourself. My observations were more that ethics seemed to play little or no part in attitudes to the deal.

Re: FIDE Cooperation Agreement with Coca-Cola

I've not mentioned a boycott on health grounds at all! Nor plastics. Ethics and boycotts are rarely clear cut. But although I don't agree with all boycotts, I must confess to being more than a little surprised that so many people regard sponsorship by Coca Cola as self evidently a good thing, when i...

Re: FIDE Cooperation Agreement with Coca-Cola

I was using a short-hand. The victims of the excesses of global capitalism are rarely white middle aged men in western liberal democracies. Or if my words are being subjected to this level of scrutiny, the consequences of the excesses of global capitalism disproportionately affect other demographics...

Re: FIDE Cooperation Agreement with Coca-Cola

Not really the place for a lengthy debate on capitalism, but I suspect whilst opposition to capitalism may be a minority position, the extent of such opposition would be dependent on the type of capitalism in operation. There are a lot of definitions. Plenty of examples of authoritarian regimes runn...

Re: Altibox Norway 2019 - the future of chess?

Is 960 chess? I was giving a personal emotional view - how it is legally treated by FIDE hardly seems relevant. I'm not stopping others playing 960, just saying that I wouldn't regard top level players doing so more extensively as something that would grow my interest.

Re: FIDE Cooperation Agreement with Coca-Cola

Will Nakamura be prevented from drinking Red Bull if he participates in a Coca Cola event? I've seen tennis players required to turn drink bottles round and/or remove labelling at some events.

Re: FIDE Cooperation Agreement with Coca-Cola

There is a recommendation to boycott - Ethical Consumer website puts it bottom of cola products available in the UK. And there are the issues raised by Mark Thomas. I'm not sure the idea that 'there is no high profile campaign - we can probably get away with it' is exactly ethical. Every week or so,...

Re: Needing to be ECF member to play in British Championships?

I have read the thread and the various digressions thank you. Your digression gave annual membership (which you misleadingly refer to as 'compulsory') as a fundamental stumbling block to the efforts of the potential appointee to the ECF recruitment post. I disagreed with that on the basis of my expe...

Re: Needing to be ECF member to play in British Championships?

I am on the committee of a relatively small club, but I've never experienced this resistance to annual membership to which Roger refers. The barriers are more around the perception of what a club can offer beyond match chess and overcoming reluctance to dip one's toe in. The step up can be tricky, b...

A white-wash and in most cases barely five minutes spent researching the conduct of the multi-national concerned.

Just for clarity - are you paid for your services on behalf of FIDE?

Re: FIDE Cooperation Agreement with Coca-Cola

Of course the money has been accepted by others - I'm not especially keen on that either. If you believe ethical standards are important in commercial life whether paying proper tax or paying staff properly, not ravaging the environment, then you don't take the money. We are only discussing FIDE bec...

Re: FIDE Cooperation Agreement with Coca-Cola

Essentially yes. Its a cosy alliance of big organisations and has little to do with ethics. [ It is of course conceivable that for some of that period Coca cola was a responsible corporate body -the evidence is that it has left that responsibility behind in its quest for global dominance.] Easy for ...

Re: FIDE Cooperation Agreement with Coca-Cola

Hi Simon - is it a good thing that large multinational corporations are allowed to get away with low ethical standards? Most sensible people would say that forcing people to work in inhumane conditions, diverting local water supplies to service bottling plants etc was not a good thing! This is a fin...

Re: FIDE Cooperation Agreement with Coca-Cola

If the information in Mark Thomas' book is accurate and no significant improvements to ethical standards have been made, then for me it is a bad thing. I don't buy the argument that just because other global sporting bodies are happy to accept the money its ok. I'd rather there were higher ethical s...
