Re: Are Opens a little too open?

It is true that open tournaments are technically "open" to everybody, but it is ordered in such a way (often minor > intermediate > major > open) to indicate that the lower grades go nearer to the minor, and the higher to the open. Prizes also show this trend - bigger bucks surely to the bigger play...

Re: Looking for a patient coach

I offer cheap tuition, since I'm not obsessed with money and I just enjoy chess and teaching it. You can contact me at: LordPLalic@aol.com. I am 185 ECF slowplay and 191 ECF rapidplay. I have had experience with teaching many different levels via video lectures and also a demonstration board at scho...

Re: Peter Lalic chess database

You can ignore the old edition...now I have improved it. Or as comedian Tim Allen would say, "I've rewired it - for more power!" It has become more interactive, with test positions. The fact it is 7.5MB indicates a lot of multimedia! The "Introduction" text explains all... Here is the link: http://w...

Re: Problem in ChessBase 11

On his screen his ChessBase had a special "encoder" bar, which I had never before seen on my computer. Was it this? http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/howto/articles/screencap.aspx I also use this Media Encoder to make my videos but the one I saw was different. It resembled Chessbase's W...

Problem in ChessBase 11

The new "ribbon" format in ChessBase 11 confuses me. I want to insert multimedia commentary, like ChessBase Magazine does. The effect is that when one replays a game, a video / sound / picture will appear upon reaching the appropriate move (where the file is added). I am sure it can be done, and hav...

Did you know that you can claim extra time when...

...your opponent offers a draw and your clock is running? ...if (in a time scramble) your opponent only pushes forward a pawn to the 8th rank and presses his clock? It sounds like an easy way to gain 2 minutes for doing nothing, which is often decisive when players are down to a minute or so each. I...

Re: Copying and re-selling chess DVDs

Nick, you're right. It's just that some people feel so wronged by what's going on, they take it personally. Thus they genuinely feel as though they're been "robbed", and "theft" seems the most appropriate term from the way they look at it. This is understandable. I strongly opine that the makers of ...

Re: Face Book

I stopped at 2170 on chess.com. In fact I decided some time ago to cease all Internet chess playing; it gets addictive, and it's not helping anyone's chess. I really play only ECF-rated games nowadays; I cannot concentrate in friendlies, since there's no incentive.

Re: Copying and re-selling chess DVDs

I think people underestimate just how large the chess downloading community is - this should prove enlightening... in less than a week, they are already geared up to churn out the cracked version of ChessBase 11. http://immortalchess.net/forum/archive/index.php/t-4691.html When things reach this kin...

Re: Copying and re-selling chess DVDs

In my opinion, someone who downloads from Torrents is often just cheap. Therefore, the large majority would hardly have considered the actual official purchase. When it comes to some of the junk that is published on the chess video market, Torrent downloaders get certain DVDs just for the sake of co...

Re: British Chess Championships 2010

I consider it totally unfair on the other players to award one and a half points for this game. I am with you, Roger! Also, 2.45 sounds acceptable - who cares about the rule "within" an hour or whatever the default time is. Francis' timing is close enough to the default time - why not give (or take...
