Re: London Central YMCA (aka CentYMCA) Chess Club

All of which chaos suggests to me that we should have taken the option of St Stephen's tavern when it was floated in the early to mid 1980s, and that the Colonel was miguided to counsel otherwise. I still remember that meeting vividly. Partly for Mike Mozouros playing the role of a noisy devil's adv...

Re: RFA Harman

I remember Ron as one of our most erudite members at Centymca in the mid 1970s. He was a leading member of our "Egghead Quiz" team in the Inter-YMCA championships, and on one famous occasion at Dartford YMCA he gave the answer "Kemal Atatürk" to some question about the first President of Turkey. The...

Re: London Central YMCA (aka CentYMCA) Chess Club

Captain of the Centymca Wolves in the 1976 National Club Championship? That brings back the very faint memory of an away match on a fine summer afternoon in Sutton (Surrey). Interesting to see Bill Holden on the list. He is definitely still going strong as of last summer, when he was a regular at th...

An old Centymca Chess Club watering hole - especially in summer. The place where I first heard Gerry Rafferty's Baker Street.

Re: London Central YMCA (aka CentYMCA) Chess Club

I visited Mike in Folkestone last August and I can recommend the day out. The journey is surprisingly quick on the high speed line from St Pancras, and you could probably take over a pub or hotel function room or equivalent for an afternoon more easily than in the Smoke. It's unlikely that I shall g...

Re: London Central YMCA (aka CentYMCA) Chess Club

Hi Malcolm, That was my gap year, when I worked for the DHSS in regional planning (Euston Tower) and operational research (Great Titchfield Street). I was London region and national DHSS chess champion in that year. I remember the finals were held in Whitley Bay, and I beat George Spence from Liverp...

Re: I DON'T BELIEVE IT!

I did play for the DHSS chess club in the late 1980's (I in fact played one league game against Dave) and still have some of the old DHSS chess magazines, one of which contained a report of the DHSS National Championship in 1988. That year the event was won by Mark Charter of Wales and South West, ...

Re: London Central YMCA (aka CentYMCA) Chess Club

I was given to understand that Stuart had gone awol from the TAVR and that some military policemen were keen to make his acquaintance. He was also active in a Trotskyist political faction. These factors seemed to be instrumental in his sudden decision to emigrate. Of course, I could be completely wr...

Re: London Central YMCA (aka CentYMCA) Chess Club

3 b4 comes as a surprise to many opponents, but if Black plays mechanically then White has stolen an important tempo for the Queen's side expansion. The most interesting lines develop when Black mounts an early assault on that exposed b4 pawn. The Smyslov Uhlman encounter from 1967 is a splendid man...

Re: London Central YMCA (aka CentYMCA) Chess Club

Mike died in 1979 or 1980 as I recall. He was well known and liked as a long-standing member not only of the chess club, but of the Central YMCA as a whole. I recall discussing with Mike Wills whether we should state the cause of death in the obituary that Mike wrote for the chess club bulletin. We ...
