Re: David Glueck (Oxfordshire team 1991-2)
On the general principle that the 1990s are not yet (quite) far away enough in time to be history (so putting this in General Chat), can anyone help with memories of a player and match that took place nearly 32 years ago? I have put the name of the player (strong former US junior and FM David Gluec...

If you play the Veresov and the Chigorin (as I do) then you have to love the knight

Re: We should teach children darts not chess? Discuss.
Developing mental arithmetic skills? I wonder how much knowledge of the common finishes in darts owes more to pattern-recognition skills than to mental arithmetic? Do the top darts players actually consciously calculate, or is it more likely ingrained in their memory the right combinations of tripl...

Re: British Rapidplay 2024
It’s a pity that these dates couldn’t be publicised earlier. As it is they now clash with long arranged dates for county matches in both the SCCU and EACU. Yes, that's annoying. Last season the Cambridge International sprung up and clashed with EACU County matches which we were able to move. With a...

Re: Times cryptic chess clue
When I was a schoolboy, I devised the following crossword clue. Senior officer as well. A gasser! 6, 7. I hope I'm wrong but I'll punt 'Senior Officer' as the solution. Senior officer being the clue as well as the solution. A gasser meaning a very funny joke. Just as this could appeal to a schoolboy.

I see the organisers are offering a number of rating prizes all the way down to <1600, which would indicate that 'no hopers' are very welcome. So no reason at all for Ljubica and Chris to feel bad about entering.

Re: Plaskett and Woffinden's book on the "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" Fraud
But sometimes a bad question works in the contestant's favour. Tony Kennedy for example: For £64,000, Tony was asked "Theoretically, what is the minimum number of strokes with which a tennis player can win a set?", with 12, 24, 36, and 48 as choices, which he answered as 24 (four shots to win a game...

Re: 4ncl 2022-23
Ideally, the matches would be played, either at a 4NCL weekend or separately. If not, I'd score both matches as 3-3 draws. That's probably a good deal for Barnet Knights B and MK Phoenix 2 as, on paper, they're not as strong as CSC/Kingston 1 and would likely lose a match against them. I'm less con...
