Re: Bertie Cohen - 1925 Lancashire Champion
There's a Bertram Cohen (1904-1970) from Manchester - also known as Morris Bertram according to his probate record. In 1939 he was a Synagogue Secretary, living - appropriately if this was your man, in Penrose Street, with his parents, Joseph, a Cap Fitter (whatever that may entail) and Leah. If th...

Re: Another Quiz Question
And which sire of Lincolnshire, self-titled player, celebrated & well-loved author once began a column with the sentence 'All tournament controllers, like grouse, were born to be shot at' in the very same decade as Murray's publication? For more about this question, read https://www.chesshistory.co...

Re: Remembering IM Hugh Alexander CMG CBE (19-iv-1909 15-ii-1974)
A couple of things. Alexander had a CMG, next in order would have been a KCMG and then a GCMG. The joke is that the initials stand for, 'Call Me God', 'Kindly Call Me God' or 'Kings Call Me God', and finally 'God Calls Me God'. The S. Adler who defeated Alexander in the Varsity Match of 1930 was Sol...

Re: Remembering IM Hugh Alexander CMG CBE (19-iv-1909 15-ii-1974)
Hugh's grandson Conel contacted me yesterday and kindly provided detailed insights into his grandfather. The article has been revised with the following: I have incorporated the text mentioned above plus an anonymous tribute from GCHQ plus Tim's correspondence chess details. I have included a corre...

Re: Queens Gambit and Netflix
I dunno, how's it depicted in the book In the book, it is clear that the orphanage is not segregated. Beth's friend Jolene is Black and Jolene describes Beth as White. As for Othello, C. L. R. James had the opinion that Black actors should play every other role in Shakespeare except that, otherwise...

Re: Where was James Mason born?
James Mason's book 'Social Chess', in addition to games played by established masters, contains three games won by R. J. Buckley and two by S. J. Stevens. This seems to be an acknowledgement of their friendship.

Re: Where was James Mason born?
EDIT: I said I was going to post the text from the Cheltenham Examiner article that Gerard requested but I see John Saunders has done it first. I don't know who S.J. S. was but the column's editor was W. S. Branch, who was not always reliable. The only 'S. J. S.' I can find who might fit the bill i...
