Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

Here is the bit about "restrictions on participation in gatherings" as it now stands: https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2020/684/regulation/5 Paragraph (1) of regulation 5 now says that a person must not participate in a gathering of more than six people. But it creates several exceptions to that...

ECF webmaster Andrew Walker has started a section on the history of chess at club, league and county levels
This level of efficiency from the ECF is frankly incredible. Congratulations to Andrew Walker.

Re: History of Chess Clubs

It would be great if the ECF kept a page of links to chess histories - for club or county. Perhaps we can start here with a list of histories. This may inspire others to write a history of their area. I am aware that Roy Maddock compiled a 117-page history of Harrow Chess Club for its centenary in 2...

History of Chess Clubs

Some traditional chess clubs may not survive Covid given the medical risks associated with over the board play. We need to prepare for the worst. Chess has been a marvellous source of competitive recreation for tens of thousands of people since it was popularised in Victorian times. Future generatio...

Re: Carlsen Problem

This is an example of a great chess problem to which the answer is 39. The other question to which the answer is 39 is "What is the value of a chess army?" Are there any others?

Re: 4NCL Online

The online meeting on Tuesday 26th May entitled Can Online Chess Overcome Cheating? seems timely bringing together some of the key components: sports regulation, playing platforms, statistical software, players, captains.

Re: 4NCL Online

There was a time when, if a team withdrew from a competition, its captain would politely apologise to the opposing team's captain for the inconvenience - arranging teams takes time and effort. The modern approach is to go straight to social media proclaiming a higher cause. I miss the old ways.

Final standings in abandoned leagues

A number of leagues, possibly all, are about to be abandoned for public health reasons before all of the matches are completed. Is there a protocol for deciding the final standings? Taking the current standings can be unfair if a team has yet to play some strong opposition. Cancelling the season is ...

On-line servers will still ban players because they feel like it, without the player concerned having any comeback.
As apparently happened to Ironaut who protested via YouTube.
