Living in Australia, I'm out of the loop a bit. So I only just noticed the field for the London Classic. Can someone explain why the London Classic is part of the GCT and therefore no English player is competing in the top section? Is this considered a good thing for English chess? I apologise if th...

Re: Expats

Also, I'm not sure what time zone you're using. The games started at 9.30am on Sunday and Monday. :) It appears I misread the entry form. 7.30pm -> midnight is still potentially a late finish. A comparable 7 round English event has round times http://www.e2e4.org.uk/sunningdale/May2010/index.htm Fr...

Re: Expats

Just curious. Do players in Australia have to bring their own sets and clocks as the players do in America? I found the round times and the move rates on the chesschat link. The move rates are 90 30 ( all the moves in 90 minutes with a 30 second increment). This requires a digital clock - so presum...

No, the organisers via clubs and state organisations provide all the equipment.

Re: Expats

Roger, the main problem with Australian weekenders is geographical. Virtually any weekender involving travel will require a flight in this country and that's more than most people are willing to do. Therefore, an "average" size UK weekender would seem like a big tournament here. It's just that the p...

Re: Expats

Eric Teichmann won a big weekender in Australia last week. The Ballarat weekender is in its 44th year, and this year attracted a strong field with 4 IM's and 4 FM's. Eric scored 6.5/7 conceding just one draw with IM Leonid Sandler, but beating IM's West and Solomon along the way. Also playing were s...

Re: Expats

Well the good news from an Australian perspective is that George Xie has a GM in the bag. This will be his second GM norm, though he has a bit to get to 2500 as well. Gawain Jones won against Alex Wohl today, and has perhaps the kindest of draws in the last round against up and comer ,Yi Yuan who is...

Re: Expats

So Gawain is dropping behind Stewart Haslinger in the race for Board 5 in the 2010 Olympiad team. A draw with Johanson with black is not a bad result, but not great either. Johanson is very solid and tough to beat but with most of his emphasis devoted to coaching rather than playing these days is p...

Re: Expats

Gawain is having a tough time of it in Sydney. He lost to defending Australian Champion Stephen Solomon today in a completely wild game. Tomorrow he is playing Eddy Levi, a known wild openings specialist who can upset strong players and who can also backfire spectacularly against almost anyone. Eddy...

Re: Expats

...... like grading issues (we have the cursed Glicko system here)... Carl - could you describe the drawbacks of the Glicko system in your view ? Several players here think it may be preferable, although I doubt they have the experience you have. Actually, I don't have any problems with any rating ...

Re: Expats

David Garner continues to win in the Major tournament. I think he may have a point to prove for not being allowed in to the Championships. He hasn't really been tested yet, and I feel he may just be too good for the field. But saying that, most of my predictions go pear-shaped so I hope I haven't ji...

Re: Expats

Bad news from down under- Gawain Jones lost in round 3 to George Wendi Xie, 2448 rated. George Xie is an up and down player who can take out some pretty strong opposition on his day, and it seems it was his day. But Gawain came back the following day to win the lightning tournament. Unfortunately, ...

Re: NZ Women's Champion

Is it a Men's and Women's Championship, or a Open and Women's Championship? There are no seperate women's events. The tournament consists of a Championship closed to players above a certain rating, and Major and Minor limited ratings events. One woman is playing in the Championship, others are play...
