Re: Illegal move during match - what to do

Thank you everyone for you advice on this. I just checked the leagues website to see if they have a copy of the league rules available there, but they don't. So I shall ask on Tuesday about this. I suspect it won't come up again, but just in case.

Re: Illegal move during match - what to do

Depending on the league, the captains or deputies can frequently act as arbiters. A few years ago, (when it was unclear what powers the captains had) I was playing in the Civil Service league and noticed one of my colleagues castling queenside, having previously played Rxa4, then Ra8. (Yes, it was ...

Good idea - that's one of my favourite chess websites.

Re: Illegal move during match - what to do

As a kibitzer or member of the team, the socially-correct thing to do is to contact the arbiter or captain. On the other hand, the rules are very clear and precise: "If during a game it is found that an illegal move, including failing to meet the requirements of the promotion of a pawn or capturing...

Re: Illegal move during match - what to do

Hi Dave. Need more details. What was the outcome of the game? Did your guy win? Was he getting beat? Did the result of the match depend upon this game? As captain If you spot something like this you have to think quick. Will stopping the game and making the lad play another King move (touch move ap...

Illegal move during match - what to do

I've searched the forum for an answer to this but didn't find one. I've been drafted as the captain of a new team - though I am not very good and have not much experience. In our match last week, the person playing board two had about 12 minutes left when he made an illegal move (moved into check), ...

Re: A question about noise during a match

David, Putting my serious head on. I can assure you that no one in Chess Scotland is out to attack you. There were concerns raised about the incident that you raised as quite simply it should not have happened. It was totally wrong and goes against everything we try to do as arbiters. Unfortunately...

Re: A question about noise during a match

This whole affair is very strange. It is odd in the first place that in a club match an arbiter should need to be present ( what sort of league are we referring to) and that secondly such a ridiculous decision should have been made. What sort of opponent claims the game under these circumstances an...

Re: A question about noise during a match

As I said in that other thread about bogus players. "People believe anything...." I emailed the Bon Accord Club Sec. before I would make a comment. It's hopefully some kind of Christmas gag or the lad has seriously mixed up the place and date. I haven't been called a lad in quite a while - cheers f...

Re: A question about noise during a match

I headed this one off as (yet again...) some information was copied into the Chess Scotland forum here: http://scotchess.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=1349&mforum=scotchess Thanks Carl. Ask a simple question and get libelled all over the UK! I've registered there so as to respond, but an administra...

Re: A question about noise during a match

North of the border there seems to be some doubt about this story. Robert Lothian made enquiries about this and here is John Clifford's response. '1. I have been on the Bon-Accord Chess Club committee since 1985 and do not remember anyone called Dave Roberts. 2. I believe I am the only arbiter call...

Re: A question about noise during a match

I've just been made aware of the replies here. Yes, it did happen. I think the arbiter's name was John but am not sure, it was a long time ago. As I am on my way out to a job interview, I can't respond more fully now, but will do so later. I really had no intention of opening such a can of worms her...

Re: A question about noise during a match

Thanks for the support. I was rather upset at the time, hence my giving up chess for almost a decade. Hopefully things have moved on a bit now, as I don't want to have to deal with this again. But I love playing chess, so here we go again!

Re: A question about noise during a match

Hi,

just wanted to thank everyone again for their input. I've decided to play on a team, which is starting next week. And I've taken the advice to let the arbiter know about the pump.

Wishing you all a very good new year!

Re: A question about noise during a match

We do tend to apply the Laws more rigourously north of the border. But this was obviously wrong at the time. It could certainly now be seen as bringing a source of noise into the playing hall and as such Jack is correct in saying that you should inform the arbiter. If this is done then I would doub...
