Re: Cambridge International Open

I've been informed privately that I am able to play. It seems that registration and entry mean the same thing - in any case no one has given me a link for registration!

Re: Cambridge International Open

I've just noticed I was supposed to register for this tournament by yesterday ... (I am not used to doing this so didn't remember.) The regulations say there is a form to use on the ECF website but unfortunately I cannot find it. I've emailed the contact address given but thought I'd ask here in cas...

Re: Blackpool Chess Conference 2022

Eric, is there some reason you're not addressing this question to the congress organiser? Yes. I haven't decided whether to enter. I didn't want to email him in case he was dealing with a large number of enquiries. I thought that if someone had already asked him similar questions it would be more e...

Re: Blackpool Chess Conference 2022

I'd be interested to know how "B/ Immediate withdrawal if you show any signs of Covid / cold / flu symptoms. C/ Temperature gun will be available." mentioned in the Covid guidance section on the website will be applied. I'd imagine that many will be reluctant to withdraw if for example they get a mi...

Re: It's Only Me! : Remembering Tony Miles (23-iv-1955 12-xi-2001)

Are the colours the right way round in game 2? Otherwise it's three blacks in a row and 'interesting' play from someone who beat Karpov. I was also surprised to see this result. I've known Tony (Slinger) for some years and I'm sure he would have told everyone if he'd once beaten Tony Miles in 11 mo...

Hull v Manticores 2 should be a good match today
It was! We came quite close to winning the match but sadly I lost an endgame that was probably drawn.

Re: Div 3N season 2021/22

Has the minimum number of teams from a sporting viewpoint rather than a financial one been discussed? I would be interested to know, if captains are allowed to disclose this. I imagine even Mick would agree that Manticores 2 and 3 and two other teams only playing each other several times a season wo...

Re: Div 3N season 2021/22

In recent Div 3N seasons, teams from Ireland and the Isle of Man have played and their players would presumably all have stayed at the hotel venues every weekend (possibly with an extra night). These teams are unfortunately missing this year. I'd hope there are more teams in the 2022-23 season and t...

Re: The death knells of online chess?

Possibly just the death knells of 4NCL online congresses? As I write (which I suspect is one of the least busy times!), there are well over 1000 players in the various tournaments on the Lichess calendar which are free to enter. I presume the main attraction of paying to play in a 4NCL online congre...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

Still that vexing time lag until really protected of course. The medics seem very unsure. Yorkshire league is trying for maybe 75% teams overall, we'll find out how well that works this weekend. York seem to have players, but definitely down on strength Vs normal. Once again Martin, the Yorkshire L...

Re: Cheating in chess

How much time did Black have at this stage? If short of time, an innocent explanation is that the intention was ...Re2+ but the mouseslip ...Re1 occurred. It looked to me like Black had compensation for the exchange after ...Re2+; Kxe2, Qxg2 - so it might have been an intended winning rather than dr...

Re: Sinquefield Cup 17th to 26th August

I've found a combination of IM standard player plus top GM works well for me. For example, when Tania Sachdev and Peter Leko were commentating, Tania was often asking Peter the questions that occurred to me.

Grischuk and Williams certainly sounds an intriguing combination!

Re: Chess Covid regulations poll

Suppose I would normally wear a mask but I happen to know that my opponent, a much stronger player, will decline to play someone who is not wearing a mask. If I don't wear one for this game, I "win" half a point instead of the expected zero. A similar thought had occurred to me: you could claim an ...

Re: Scarborough Congress

Well the form does ask for date of birth in addition to name, address and phone number ... I used Edge and Opera. Perhaps the problem is at my end but everything else has been working normally for me. I'll leave it to others with more knowledge of internet protocols to comment further and will enter...
