Re: Takeback requests in online games

Some interesting points have been made although it seems like there is not yet a convention or consensus about when takeback requests are acceptable. I did wonder how often they are used as a form of gamesmanship or distraction! My own preference would be to never make or grant takeback requests in ...

Re: Takeback requests in online games

Well actually it was that quote which is in my link which raised further questions for me ... It sounds like there is no general rule prohibiting takebacks. If this is correct, then you have questions of convention: under what circumstances is it OK to ask for or give takebacks? How many times can y...

Takeback requests in online games

I've stopped playing online but still watch games from time to time. I wondered what rules and conventions currently apply to takeback requests in online play? A forum search for "takeback" gave me this recent post suggesting that different competitions apply different rules. My impression is that t...

Re: ECF Yearbook 2021

Is it blank? Not on my browser and I thought there was a lot of interesting content. However, it does seem slightly old-fashioned to read reports of online events that occurred several months ago which might well have been livestreamed by someone at the time. Possibly your question is a reference t...

Re: Double Check and Mate

I did a search of my competitive standardplay games since 2000 (slightly over 1000 games) which found 6 games where a double check was made. So I can at least say they are not very common in my games!

EDIT: In no cases did the double check deliver mate.

Re: Happy Birthday IM James Sherwin (25-x-1933)

If you want obscure then I will offer Roelof Westra. No longer competing, but still occasionally imbibing :) Never played him but have "seen him around" at congresses in the past - when did he play RJF? (chessgames.com has just one 1980 game for him) I've just noticed this thread. Roelof is not obs...

Bh6/...Bxa3/...Bh3 sacrifices have been played by various players - Shirov should be pleased!
I realised a few minutes after posting this though that "various" is debatable as two games I was thinking of were played by Duda.

Re: Wijk aan Zee 2021

In Anton-Tari it's remarkable that a zugzwang that wins for Black appears to have been missed in an endgame White was trying hard to win: 54...Bb5. Presumably the idea which I've checked for a few seconds with an engine running is: 55.a4, Ba6; 56.a5, Bb5; 57.h5, Kg7 and Black stops the kingside pawn...

Re: my favorite but unusual line of the Lopez exchange for Black

I imagine it would occur quite a lot in online games? Checking on Chessbase's online database, I found several 2200+ players who have played 5.Nxe5. A couple of the games look like pre-arranged draws however.

It will be interesting to see the age profile of the of the players - my guess is that those still at school will be more tolerant of the conditions!

Re: Cheating in chess

Justin, I know there are certain number of bans overturned and this would appear to be an example where a player could relatively easily argue their case. A human would look at the appeal and I imagine the opening theory aspect would be easily verifiable, so I would have thought an appeal could wel...

Re: Cheating in chess

Another feature that often irritates is the tendency to be told that "letting time run out rather than resigning" can lead to a temporary suspension. I have been given this reprimand several times, none of them occasions where I had deliberately let time run out, but simply had very little time lef...
