What should we know about said person?
That he didn't write the article in question and probably doesn't exist. The author of the article was Tony Allen-Mills.

Re: Chess Covid regulations poll

Is it likely the idea of being able to claim a half point bye if your opponent doesn’t want to wear a mask will be commonly adopted by chess organisers? Or is it more likely just to be a short lived idea? Or could an unmasked player claim half-point byes if opponents insist on covering their face a...

Re: Chess Covid regulations poll

Has there been any conclusive evidence or charges of murder from unmasked people killing masked victims of Covid. I am not a lawyer, but it clearly wouldn't be murder; you'd have to show that someone was deliberately infecting people to get that charge to stick. You might get a manslaughter charge ...

Re: News

I thought his "offence" in the case of the BCF was that he opened interest bearing accounts in his own name and transferred BCF funds into them. I don't know if it was ever established that he siphoned off some of the amounts or the interest on them. That's pretty much my recollection as well. Mone...

Re: Chess Covid regulations poll

Quite right. In normal circumstances there are very few situations where others are held responsible for our personal safety. The operating theatre, drivers of public transport are exceptions, but generally individuals are expected to understand self responsibility. There are numerous situations wh...

Not an original idea, see Double Move chess. Invented in 1957, apparently. You might be able to play it online here. That site is blocked for me because it's been classified as a gambling site, so I don't know if it works or not.

Re: Media comments on chess

Chess on TV tomorrow - Channel 4 from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm.

That's according to Toto Wolff, who said that "some interesting chess games could be possible tomorrow" in the Grand Prix.

Maybe Red Bull will be providing the sets.

Re: Handicap Team Chess

Hello. With Leagues starting to commence again, we have a handicap league where the total rating of players affects how many points are needed to win for the team. This is based on the overall grading of teams of 5 but I am going to push a return to 6 per team come the new year. With the move in gr...

Re: ECF Pre-Season Regional County Challenge

If this is the way 'forward', a lot of us will be dropping out of chess for ever. I doubt it. In the one event I've played in with similar coronavirus restrictions in place, I didn't find it unduly onerous to have to take my drink outside the playing area before removing my mask to consume it. The ...

Do we have a source for this Assuming the author of the annotations didn't give ChessBase permission to publish them, the evidence can be found in Thompson-Thurlow, British Championship, 1997, which is annotated by "ChessBase". It includes the annotation "(Quiet, does n't seem to do a lot - but ver...

Re: 2021 World Cup

And what makes it even worse is that the pieces are too light, they should not fall over so easily. They should play with one of these sets . It would solve that problem and add to the farcical nature of the whole procedure. More seriously, you could make an argument for playing Armageddon games on...

Getting any title at 60 is pretty good going 8)
Looking at his current rating, and rating history, I'd assume he qualified for it many years ago and has only recently applied for it.

Re: Cheating in chess

The better Association football analogy would be that using a computer engine outside of ICCF chess is like picking up the ball and running with it or at the very least using hands to control it prior to kicking. Calling computer usage electronic doping is not very sensible in my opinion. It's just...

Re: Question(s) about Pay to Play

It would be helpful if you linked to what you're quoting from. On the ECF rating question, the ECF only rate whole events, so there's no possibility of some players' games being omitted from rating. The only question is what, if anything, they'll charge for rating the games of non-members. You don't...

Re: Remembering FM Dave Rumens (23-ix-1939 08-vii-2017)

Did David Rumens really not play chess between 1982 and 2001, or is there another reason for this factoid? "Between 1982 and 2001 no games are recorded." Why you would say that a player has no games recorded in a database when you know from his grading record that he's been playing for some of that...
