Re: 25th 4ncl Congress!

Presumably, Keith could do a coaching session with 100 (socially distanced) players, If that's within the rules, and I've no idea whether it is or not, then I don't see why a tournament with as many players as you like wouldn't also be within the rules if you had paid coaches available to analyse e...

Re: Media comments on chess

Yes, that was my point. Nearly all of the top bridge players are men, albeit not to the same extent as in chess. Today's English top 100 bridge players (rolling National Grading System) has two women, at 44th and 69th. The only caveat is that players can elect to keep their grade private. I think t...

Re: Checkmate Covid - The Rematch

You might have another challenger - just edged ahead :D I always expected that there would be other challengers. I could of course change the rules so that arbiters who are also GMs are not eligible. At the moment, however, Kevin Thurlow is ahead of both of us. Need to get a rattle on or evok...

For more details and to download the entry form, please go to: https://northumbriamasters.com The good value group hotel rate is only available for the 4 nights from 26 August to 29 August. Will the hotel extend that to 25 August for people wanting to arrive the day before the event starts, and may...

Nice photos as well. Wonder if the demonstration board kid watching Haik playing Botterill in the final round carried on playing chess?
Is it Neil Carr?

Re: Chess clubs by size

Some radical changes are needed in the way club chess is organised e.g. shift to weekend fixtures ... The times they are a-changin. That would be going back to what it used to be for me. Most of my club chess while at school and university was at the weekend (Kent and Devon county leagues, the Nati...

Would it be in Informator ( which I don't have )?
Only slightly more results than given above:

15-19: Kraidman, Watson, Hawksworth, Kinlay, Van Dijk 5.5, etc.

Re: Chess clubs by size

So instead, I ranked all the clubs by the grade of their 10th-strongest player (EDIT - added Wood Green): A question would be how many of those top 10 players are current, active, bona fide members? If you were to look at the 10th best player from each club where you only count players who have the...

Re: Suitability of acceleration?

I have run club tournaments with a similar number of players to the ones you are expecting. Pairing Q1 v Q2 and Q3 v Q4 in round 1 removes the worst mis-matches then just carry on as in a normal Swiss. Isn't that just going to result in the same pairings as with a normal pairing system, but with th...

Re: Digital clock repairs

Also I don't trust the digital clocks after 34 moves as the time doesn't seem to go back. Some let you run out of time and then add it. That's just a setting on the clock. You can either set them to add on time for the second time control when the clock button has been pressed the right number of t...

Re: Chess clubs by size

I don't think the grading team has ever published the criteria for removing a club listed against an individual player on the list and I recall Richard Haddrell stating that some of the club information was dubious. I think they did - under the old grading system it was 3 years with no results reco...

Re: Northumbria Masters, 26-30 August, 2021

Therefore I have simplified the guidance that I intend to put on the entry form. It will now read: "Please note: Covid-19 safety measures as prescribed by UK law for indoor public events at the time of the 2021 Northumbria Masters will be applied. Entrants and visitors will be expected to observe t...

Depending on travel rules some non-resident foreign players may have difficulties.
On the other hand, some British players who prefer to play abroad at that time of year might find they can't and Hastings is their only viable option.
