Re: Media comments on chess
World Snooker Championship on Eurosport tday. Commentator:' If this were a chess game, Maflin might be inclined to resign'. I am sure he meant the individual frame, not the whole match. What a strange comment to make when snooker players can resign the frame - it's called conceding in snooker. Hasn...

Re: Candidates Tournament 2020
It's not immediately obvious, but you set up the position, then select "Analysis Board", then it's the book symbol (highlighted in the screenshot) you need to click on to get tablebase analysis.JustinHorton wrote: ↑Tue Apr 20, 2021 10:13 amHow do I cause that to be displayed, after I've set up a position?

By "without involving chess.com or lichess ", I meant without telling them you were doing the analysis on their site and of their methods.JustinHorton wrote: ↑Sun Apr 18, 2021 7:04 pmI am missing something here - whose detection methods is this research using

Re: Cheating in chess
There's no reliable way for chess.com or lichess to really know what the rate of false positive of their algorithms actually is. With a sufficiently large pool of trustworthy volunteers, they could attempt an experiment whereby they asked some volunteers to use engine assistance all the time some o...

Re: Cheating in chess
Ian, what you say is undoubtedly correct, but if you were in that position would you do it? Yes, if it continued after a warning. I'd also ask him why he was doing it. If there was some plausible, but flawed, reason then I'd tell him what an acceptable alternative would be, although I can't think o...

Re: Cheating in chess
If you were acting in a purely altruistic way, what would you do? The lichess Terms of Service say you're not allowed to do anything that they "would consider against the spirit of playing fairly in our community". They could reasonably say that deliberately playing badly, even if the motive wasn't...

Re: Arbiting question on 50 move rule
They are designed for use as lap counters in athletics, where you only have to press the counter every 60 - 90 seconds. You can get tally counters for counting people in, and out, of places that are designed to be pressed very frequently. I saw staff using them a few months ago to count the number ...

Re: Cheating in chess
Mathew reckons as many as 40-50 people are on the cheat detection team. I may be wrong but my reading of Matthew's comment ["If there are 40-50 people ..."] seemed speculative rather than a statement of belief. The person from lichess being interviewed (that was linked to a few days ago) said this,...

Re: Remembering CGM Keith Richardson (02-ii-1942 10-iv-2017)
Keith played at one of the early English Senior Championships organised by Neil Graham at Dovedale. We had a chat about golf - his handicap was 14, respectable club standard. I've never been better than 19 myself. As Keith was excellent at cricket and squash, I wonder if his handicap might have bee...

Re: Cheating in chess
My suspicion is that this user has been deliberately losing games in order to get back to the 1500 starting rating in order to do a speedrun back up to his usual rating. He has got back down to 1500 twice only to quickly start winning again back up to his usual standard. The concept of a chess spee...

maybe in June /July time but we need to agreed on the membership fees 1st Hopefully they will remain unchanged ,,,,but a reduction for returning members, who missed joining last year, could tempt people to join early. I thought I read somewhere that there might be another incentive to join the ECF ...

Re: Hansen on Nakamura
So nothing I could find evidence of, but multiple rumours of past obnoxious behaviours. As someone on the receiving end, I can say he's the only person I've ever played where the (American) arbiter thought it appropriate to apologise to me for his behaviour once the game was over. That left me wond...

Re: Cheating in chess
The player was breaking the rules, the system caught him and he was flagged. It was an innocent mistake and the player was unaware that they were breaking the rules. What rule do you think the player was breaking? As far as I know there is no rule prohibiting someone from playing against a relative...

Re: 10 in 1 -a record?
Yes
No. I think it's easily demonstrated that 10 is the limit - when a piece moves it can result in at most 3 discovered checks by another piece, plus a maximum of 7 direct checks by a knight.
