What might be an idea is having more than one such event.
True, but they do not come cheaply - I was surprised and impressed that this one happened. Elsewhere, money has not been easy to find this year.

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2019 - Isle of Man

Looks like Matlakov will lose. Does it? My thinking was that he was in a highly complex position, an hour down on the clock and playing Carlsen. However, Magnus does seem to have been extraordinarily careless. While I try not to be too influenced by computer evaluations, when it keeps saying +10 th...

Re: 45th Guernsey International Chess Festival

Is there a reason why the pairings do not look quite normal?

I thought there was a need to be over 50% or did I just make that up?
There is a minimum requirement, but it is 35%.

Re: World Junior Under 20 Chess Championship

The statements on the Iranian Chess Federation website imply heavily that Gholani withdrew from the tournament in protest of being paired against the Israeli, rather than merely defaulting the game in protest. So what was the doctor's note about? The equivalent statement about Tabatabaei only comme...

Re: World Junior Under 20 Chess Championship

Tabatabaei is a key member of Iran's successful Olympiad team. You probably shouldn't bet on Iran even being in the Olympiad unless they promise to play any team they are drawn against, which of course they will not do. It is widely assumed that the Iranian government cares about being excluded fro...

It remains courageous to insist this of the world's top players.
It sounds as though the players ( Karjakin, at least ) accepted that the state of affairs was unsatisfactory. No doubt more details will emerge in due course.

10 years ago pretty much everybody involved would have had 2000+ ratings.
Joey, even by your standards that is complete and utter rubbish.

Re: Chess and Pension Fraud - allegation

Quillan Kirkwood was handed a 10-year ban, while Quillan and Garrett both received 12-year disqualification orders. Alex Deane, chief investigator for the Insolvency Service, said: "None of the directors expressed any real regret for deliberately misleading people who were mainly small pension inve...

Re: World Junior Under 20 Chess Championship

For political reasons, matches between following pairs of teams are considered prohibited clashes, unable to be drawn into the same group: Gibraltar / Spain, Kosovo / Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo / Serbia. (Armenia / Azerbaijan and Russia / Ukraine were also identified as prohibited clashes, but ...

Football goes to great lengths to avoid pairings that will cause this sort of incident.
That's true in that, as in sport generally, Israel is rather curiously defined as being in Europe rather than Asia. Individual globally based events are more difficult to fix.

Re: World Junior Under 20 Chess Championship

(I'm not sure what would happen if they did. Would FIDE invalidate norms from their own event?) I would certainly hope so. One thing that the new administration has got right is to follow other sports in outlawing such discrimatory behaviour. It is disappointing, although perhaps not surprising, th...

The latest Private Eye has just dropped through my letterbox. Half of p9 is devoted to a certain belated departure from The Spectator.

edit - Justin gets an honourable mention.
