Re: Does the DGT2010 have a design fault?

Have a setting where you can add a preset amount of time to both sides with only a button press or two. In addition display the clock's opinion on the move count. Taking the second point first, I suppose I could accept that, provided it were understood that the clock's opinion carried no more weigh...

Re: Xenophobic abuse in British chess in the post-Brexit world

That may be sad but much worse is the failure to recognise that articulating certain prejudices is sure to be grossly offensive to others. I'm pretty sure that this unpleasant character mate2mate made the comments not because they assumed no offence would be taken, but because they wished to give a...

Re: Does the DGT2010 have a design fault?

Personally I think that attitude is nonsense and the cause of the problems with DGTs. If players have played quickly, the flag fall might be getting on for an hour after the time control has been reached. I did say that both players have to be satisfied that the requisite number of moves has been m...

I've never been able to concentrate at all with online chess.
I find I can sometimes manage it for six minutes.

Re: Attracting new players to the game; who is responsible?

Having said all the above, chess clubs do offer a chance for people to get out and socialise and for different generations to mix. It's not just that. Online chess is great for blitz, but not much use for full length games against people you don't know. Aside from the fact that your opponent is pos...

Re: Cheating in chess

FIDE's anti cheating efforts need two targets. A point I made repeatedly when I was on the original Anti-Cheating Committee. Unfortunately, computer cheating was the hot topic about which FIDE felt they needed to look as if they were doing something, and there was no enthusiasm for anything else. T...

Re: Xenophobic abuse in British chess in the post-Brexit world

I don't see how it could be: an attack against all being the same as an attack on one. So if I shout to the world, "all members of [ choose your population group ] are [ choose your term of abuse ], that's fine. Whereas if I say to an individual "you are a member of [ that population group ], so yo...

I believe that's where the device was stored.
So he played in a chess tournament with a tv remote control in his underpants. Come on, haven't we all done that?

Interesting change for next year Press release
"The rest of the tour roster will be selected on the basis of URS ratings at January 1, 2018 and average classical FIDE ratings in 2017."

Whatever you think of URS ratings, what is the point of averaging FIDE ratings?

Re: London Chess Classic 2017

It's looking like Magnus thinks he can play anything against Mickey and get away with it. Although it would be a privilege to play Magnus, I would find his habit of fiddling with discarded pieces an irritation. Sadky, Mickey losing looked a fairly safe bet from when he didn't nail down the draw on ...

Re: Robots and chess: Letter to 'The Times' 8 Dec. 2017

I will be surprised if any further contributions are published in the new week beginning Dec. 11th. It seems strange that these letters assert a view that I think we all ( aside from the Deep Mind team ) would have found completely reasonable until a week ago, but has now been shown to be quite wro...
