Re: Chess and cricket

"does anyone know of any other chess-playing cricketers." I've played in European Senior Championships at both sports, though I'd classify myself more as a cricket-playing chesser. Peter Svidler's batting technique is definitely on the, um, uncoached side. That said, there's some good hand-eye going...

Re: Glorney Cup Round 1

I was just stating that my own participation in the discussion thread was done, as far as I could see. I know Mike fairly well as a local Oxfordshire organiser, as well as a national one, and respect his even-handed fairness and diplomacy. When he had got himself involved (over and above the call of...

Re: Glorney Cup Round 1

I am no longer sure what "the issue" is. There initially appeared to be an issue with Matthew, and then an issue with me when I made a post in which I cited facts (without expressing opinions, apart from my guess that Matthew was taking an active interest in how the team was getting on even when he ...

Re: Glorney Cup Round 1

The arrangement was that all juniors from all the federations up to the age of 18 were supposed to get the £6.50 discounted evening meal. I've been off playing cricket in Cornwall this weekend, so haven't read any "unedited" posts. This may be for the best. I guess that the quoted information mean...

Re: Glorney Cup Round 1

Matthew Turner thinks £13 for an evening meal is reasonable. 3 courses of swanky nosh £13 for adults £6.50 for kids . There was some confusion on the first night over what the organisers had agreed with the hotel. But - £6.50 for a 3 course meal. Or the fish and chip shop (500m away), the alter...

Re: Castling Out of Check

I'm reminded of what is probably the most perceptive question I've been asked by a child beginner. On being shown that Ke1-f1-g1 was illegal due to f1 being guarded by an opposing piece, he asked if he could "move the king two squares like this instead" and went Ke1-f2-g1. The f2 square was unguarde...

Re: ECF Membership - The proposal

Would a bronze membership be sufficient for all of the games in the competitions above to be ECF graded, as the FIDE side of things is already covered by my CS membership? Your position is a bit like Max's except, I presume, you remain a member of Chess Scotland by choice rather than necessity. I t...

Re: ECF Membership - The proposal

The implications of the proposal to England-resident players who are registered with another federation aren't clear to me. I live in England. I am SCO on the FIDE list, and a member of Chess Scotland. I play local league and 4NCL, and possibly the occasional e2e4 event. The only reason I am current...

Nope, sorry, I was playing for Manchester in that one.

Edit: And chose the nice green background, a misdemeanour for which I am truly sorry.
