Re: Sinquefield Cup
I believe that Chess24 is getting the feeds from the DGT boards. If the players start analysing at the table, the two kings could get moved to same-colour squares and that could get picked up as a draw, which will last until corrected. I see it fairly often there.

Re: Isn't this the time ...
I remember back in the '70s that my opponent would usually extend his hand at the end of a game. I don't recall it so much at the start of a game.

Re: Grand Chess Tour St Louis Rapid & Blitz
For the four players below Nakamura to leap-frog him in the Sinquefield Cup in the most Naka-unfriendly way possible we'd have: Aronian winning with 20 points; So second with 15 points; Karjakin third with 12 points and MVL fourth with 10 points Their standings would then be...Aronian 39, So 38, Kar...

Re: Blitz games
Blitz games can be useful at any level but they're not a substitute for longer time controls with some serious thinking. One of the problems with quick-play games is that it's very easy to come to rely on your instinctual move and then to forego the deep thinking. Blitz can make you lazy if you let ...

People resign only when the pain of playing on in a position exceeds the agony of accepting defeat.

Re: Yorkshire Chess History Site
Thank you so very much for your link to the wayback engine. Steve Mann's site was the only one I could ever find which listed Yorkshire Individual Champions. Steve Mann's site - which has not been updated for some time - has finally gone down. e.g. http://www.sjmann.supanet.com/People/Woodhouse,%20E...

Re: Liverpool Englsh Rapidplay Congress now open for registrations
Thanks for the replies but I was motivated to post by the part, "Where players have no current/previous grade under any of the above they may enter any competition.". Now, I know I had a grade back in the '70s but I'd defy anyone to find it. It seems harsh to force me into the Open section after a n...

Re: Liverpool Englsh Rapidplay Congress now open for registrations
I've not been graded since the late '70s and not played another human since the early '90s. I know I had a grade of 193 and think I had a grade of 223 but can't truly recall. Which sections would I be eligible to enter and win prizes in?
Would I need to join the ECF and/or Fide?

Re: Adjournments and Adjudication
Thank you, Anthony so are you allowed to take notes with you whilst your playing then! and refer to them whilst playing or Have I misunderstood you entirely! Matt. As you are aware, such a thing would be cheating. Your suggestion that referring to notes or taking advice during an adjournment is che...

Re: Rules about drinking alcohol before or during matches
You've yet to give any grounds, though, Matt, beyond your own personal dislike of drink. Some suggest that the occasional tipple is even beneficial to health. It promotes an increase in oestrogen formation which can help to reverse osteopaenia and can boost the immune system in some. What are your g...

Re: Rules about drinking alcohol before or during matches
David, you're riddled with assumptions and bigotry. If you, personally object to the aroma of fermented hops and barley then you have as much right to object as does any player who objects to a noxious miasma originating across the board. It is not meet to single out another's personal pleasure as o...

Re: Rules about drinking alcohol before or during matches
I grew up and had my formative chess years during a time when smoking was commonplace and there was an absolute expectation of being able to smoke during a chess match. Any attempts to raise the subject at an AGM were laughed into silence and quickly passed over. It might seem that alcohol consumpti...

Re: Adjournments and Adjudication
Matt's comments on the expectation of cheating are a fresh slant to the adjournment merry-go-round.
Arguably, between sessions is not "during the game", though, and so taking advice or referring to notes is not disallowed.
