Re: e2e4 Buxton Congress : 29 June - 1 July 2012
Going back to the hotel room debate i am sorry to hear that people had rooms cancelled but as has been posted if you book outside of the e2e4 provisions then there is always a possibility that things could go wrong. I have played in many of the events run by Sean and on each occasion i have booked o...
Re: THANKS!
I think the North League should be scrapped all rounds in the Midlands it took a lot of south players 2-3 hours travel this last weekend and then there can be no complaints about South centric ( whatever that means ) . We all meet in the middle and there is chess for all . I know many South based fr...

Re: Road to Grandmaster
I think GM Davies went to Israel for a while and studied with GM Lev Psakhis and this work seemed to help him a lot . I think there can be no substitute for a student doing the hard work but i found him useful in that he was quickly able to spot the right opening to play, common errors , technical w...

Teach them to play and hopefully in a few years they can take over while we retire to the bar !

Re: Road to Grandmaster
Just picked up on this thread and whilst Will may be having a break from his GM journey for exams the subject of coaching is a good one. I have tried a few myself and i have found GM Nigel Davies to be very good . I have worked with stronger players but i think the combination of Nigel being a GM an...

Re: Does money buy success?
[quote="matt_ward"]In my opinion money buys success in chess. Especially the league I play in, I've now not played in ages and will not change my mind. The money in chess is making the game worse than ever. These days Clubs are having a team of paid outside professionals to win them the title. I per...

Re: Has anyone ever given up chess?
If "my era" were 1969-1972, I would cite Adams, Summerscale, Agnos, Mortazavi, Ledger, Hennigan, Morris, Wall, Tozer, Loz, Quillan, Buckley and a string of contemporary FMs (myself, Collinson, Dishman, Piper, Duncan, Laurence Webb, etc). Edited after responses (below) from Alan and Roger I have fon...

Re: Promoting chess for younger players in chess clubs
Matt I think it fair to say others are dangling the bait for you here and i detect a little nibble :D Your passion for the game is great and long may it continue . Sadly things are not always black and white when it come to paying players although most of the posts here are supportive of the view th...

Re: British Chess Championships 2010
I think the Championship itself must remain the focal point maybe the Major Open could be replaced by a number of all play alls in rating brackets eg 1800-1900 2000-2100 2100 + as a guide. This would mean norms would not be on offer but on the flip side you might get a few more players wishing to pl...

Re: Another Guardian howler
Chris Ward must have been gutted to have been surrounded by all those female players in Div 2 then to find they were replaced by a load of males

Re: Lack of young(ish) adults playing chess
Alcohol and women :) maybe a little work well at least thats why i gave up aged 20 I found now i am over 40 i fit into the chess scene though I reckon if some of the 18-21 year olds stick with the game though they will get over that 200 barrier towards being a master but the options are far more fun...

Re: British Chess Championships 2010
I agree with Alan and Ernie in that Adams funding if external is totally his business and lets face it from what i am reading if he did not have that he may not be playing at the British . I think he may not be the only GM being funded externally from what i hear there may be 2 others . We may be ga...

Re: British Chess Championships 2010
Things are starting to shape up a few more GM`s Steve Gordon and Keith Arkell there is still a month to go of course and the field will continue to improve. I agree with the others Adams must be favourite to win on paper by some margin but you never know .

Re: British Chess Championships 2010
Lots of interesting views mainly on the negative side few of my own to add I think there were more players playing tournaments back in the late 80`s or early 90`s i myself was one of them rated similar to now maybe a bit stronger . I never qualified for the British back then as it was hard work ther...

Re: British Chess Championships 2010
Hi all I decided to join the forum as i have been very interested in the different views about this years British. My story is a simple one in that i am playing in my first ever British Championship this year and looking forward to it . I fall into the definition of one of the weaker players under 2...
