Re: Steve Berry

A very sad loss. I met Steve several times at county matches and the British - two events in which he enjoyed great success - and he was a thoroughly nice man as well as an exceptionally strong and correct player. He will be greatly missed.

Re: British Championship 2018

Dear me! That's more Frank Muir than Andrew Muir I don't suppose the idea was to pick up the queen with a knight fork? No, I don't suppose it was. The position after 21...Rxd5 is an extremely familiar tabiya is the QGD Semi-Slav Botvinnik System. Muir simply forgot the theory - which is 22 Rxc4 Rxg...

However, Jonathan's point, which I had certainly missed, is a good one. If this is just an opinion, offered as the basis for a decision, then it won't be there.
The opinion is now published.

Re: An appeal to enrich the pool of Senior ECF Arbiters

Thanks to Michael, Nick and Brian for your kind words. I'm glad the list is finally updated - not sure what to make of my name being wrong though... :D

Hoping everyone has a good 2016.

Re: An appeal to enrich the pool of ECF Senior Arbiters

With regard to the ECF Arbiter qualification, it is not only the taking of the test but the need to gain the endorsement of a Senior Arbiter that that conspires to limit the supply of new Arbiters. Firstly, the opportunities of taking the test are few and far between and poorly publicised. It's wor...

Re: Popularity of various openings

I have a feeling James Byrne and Theo Slade prepared for me today. I mean, since when does Theo play 1...e5 as black? Nice games. But people are more likely to experiment in a rapid tournament - far more likely than they are to actually prepare for a rapidplay, that's for sure! I find that preparat...

Re: Olympiad

Shirov-Sulskis has apparently started 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Ng5 d5 5. exd5 Nxd5. The watching Stockfish reckons that 6. Nxf7 Kxf7 7. Qf3 is just winning. Basically it doesn't want to play 7. .. Ke6, thinking that just being a pawn and position down with 7. .. Qf6 is a relatively better ...

Re: Media comments on chess

Another from the BBC website here - about St. Petersburg on the eve of WWI, with a lot of attention on the 1914 chess tournament. An interesting read, though it seems a bit odd to describe Lasker's chess as elegant and poetic - I thought no-one understood it at the time?

Re: 4 day 20 round Rapidplay on Easter Bank Holiday 2014 ?

The element of the luck of the draw or a bad game are removed, it's down to stamina and ability. I'm still in my teens, and by the end of a 6-round rapidplay I'm usually exhausted. I dread to think how I would feel after 20 rounds, especially if I was a few decades older! That said I'm sure there a...

Re: Blunders in Databases

In other leagues, it is probably just as common to see the board re-set with no indication as to who won. And then for someone else to come along and move one or more of the kings to indicate the result! Clearly some OCD elements in play here... :D (those used to this convention carry it out it for...

Re: What can the ECF do to help Juniors keep on playing ch

A few words on the transition from secondary school to university, which hasn't attracted much comment. My year group at a grammar school in SW London (last year's Upper Sixth) had 9 graded players playing week in, week out for the school teams. This season, only 4 have played any graded games at al...
