Re: Touch move and castling

Am I correct in assuming that from a strictly Fide point of view, 4.6.b is not applicable here because there was no evidence that the player was in the middle of castling? I would agree with that interpretation. 4.6.b seems to be designed to prevent someone changing from castling to moving the king...

Re: Interesting finish to a game

There are some other similar 'pairs' of positions where the Black king position matters a great deal, but am still not quite sure why. Maybe there is a key position where the White bishop needs to move, thus making it impossible for the Black king to approach any closer, and also making it impossibl...

Re: Interesting finish to a game

Win for Black: 2K5/1P6/2q5/8/3B4/2Pk4/8/8 w - - 0 1 There's an obvious winning plan of K-c4-b5-a6(or c6) and then Qxb7 mate. That works if the Black King just shuffles between b8 and a8. If however it tries to escape with .. Ka7 and .. Kb6, White has Qb5 putting the King back in the zugswang box an...

Re: Interesting finish to a game

I think they are all still drawn. Not checked with an engine. Are these sort of positions in the 7-man tablebases? There's an Android app which looks up Lomonosov tables. Verdicts Variant 1: 2K5/1P6/2q3k1/8/3B4/2P5/8/8 Drawn (as is the original position) Focusing on this 6-man position, as am using...

Re: Interesting finish to a game

Interesting that bringing the BK closer to White's (after forcing it to b8) doesn't win, presumably White can use their B to stop that working? My impression is that Black has to be careful not to lose, as in some lines the bishop might be able to block the perpetual checks, but then the Black quee...

Re: Media comments on chess

knights moves between squares of the same colour have to be an even number I have clearly spent too long not playing actual chess, as I now realise (Jack was saying this, but not explicitly enough to get the point across to me!) that the knight moves between squares of the same colour thing should ...

Re: Media comments on chess

Your being out by one is surprising; I'd expect being out by two to be much more likely. I quickly estimated "four" to get to the other side, and then an extra move to get far enough "up" the board, but failed to realise that I'd land on g7 and a slightly twiddly route is needed to land precisely o...

Re: Media comments on chess

I remember Boku. I didn't go to many MSOs (the first was in 1997, not 1977 per David's typo there) - they were great fun. Mancala was another game I particularly liked.

Re: Media comments on chess

Luckily I don't frequent auctions or bid on items like that... Yes, the quality is poorer than I had realised, probably some pieces missing and replaced as you say from different sets.

Re: Media comments on chess

University Challenge in either the last quarter-final or one of the two semi-finals (I can check if anyone wants a direct link and timestamp) had a sort-of-chess question (which I've paraphrased below): "What is the minimum number of moves for a knight to go from a1 to h8 (i.e. between two opposite ...

Re: Media comments on chess

Today's Bargain Hunt had a chess set for sale: Bargain Hunt.jpg Bought for £12 (15:20 minutes into the programme) Not liked by the auctioneer, estimate £10 - £20 (29:25 minutes into the programme) Sold for £50 (36:00 minutes into the programme) Thanks for this. I'd have happily paid £50 for that! :...

Re: Could everyone lose their grade

The rules for grades will be changed in September to support monthly grading. We are still on track to deliver these on time. Everyone who has had at least one grade (separately for standard and rapid) published since 2017 will have a 4-digit grade for January 2020 when our monthly calculations wil...

That is sad news. A lovely tribute from Ernie. Are examples of his games available (e.g. the piece sacrifices as a hallmark of his play)?
