Re: World Teams 2019

Presumably the sponsorship enabled the team to be kitted out in the blazers they are wearing (so disappointed the forum hasn't had a big discussion about dress codes! :D ). Are any of the photos good enough to see what the badges say. I can't see any obvious signs of company names on there, so that ...

Re: World Teams 2019

Howell on one side, to the other it is Adams, who seems to have lost some height along with some rating points. I was puzzled by the height disparity as well. I think it can be explained by the fact that Gawain is very tall and Mickey, well, isn't. But there is also an element of position on the st...

Re: World Teams 2019

Has Speelman been a member of all the England medal-winning teams in the modern era (maybe ever)? He certainly has a lot of medals!

Re: World Teams 2019

Maybe also see if Speelman set any record for the time span between his previous and most recent appearances for England. There is the caveat that he was (presumably?) not actually intending to play in the event. You could ask who the oldest participant has been who was in the team by right (i.e. by...

Re: World Teams 2019

Nigel's absence certainly made the team younger! :D (Did Speelman set any sort of record for age when representing England, at least in the modern era?) Was the team sponsored and did that help (i.e. would going have been impossible without sponsorship, and how much did the ECF fund it)? What are th...

Re: World Teams 2019

I would also put the 2018 Olympiad fifth place that qualified England for this event up there as well, even though there was no medal that time. Absolutely not. On that occasion the team as a whole performed as per their ratings and were catapulted upwards by the Swiss pairing system. Good, but not...

Re: World Teams 2019

Just worked out that if England had nicked a minimum win against Russia, and drawn 2-2 against China, we would have tied with Russia on match points, but Russia would have still won by a half a game point. On individual performances, Luke, David and Gawain all on +3, Mickey on -2, and Jon (Speelman)...

Re: World Teams 2019

Excellent result. Congratulations to the England team.

Couple of questions to ponder:

Was there ever a chance we might have won the event, or were Russia always going to win it?
Where does this result rank compared to previous results in this and similar team events?

Re: World Teams 2019

We should leave the post-mortems over the individual performances until after the event has finished, and get behind the team to go out and get the win that they need in the final round.

Re: World Teams 2019

Swiercz will have to mate with knight and bishop on the increment. Are the computer evaluations misleading here?

Re: World Teams 2019

He didn't. England's loss confirmed (3-1). In the USA-India match, Swiercz is playing on the increment and trying to win the match for USA (he should, but the clock is a worry). Egypt about to win against the host nation (Kazakhstan).

Re: World Teams 2019

I was trying not to think about that game. 52.Ra2 looks like a bluff, hoping Ding won't take on f6. Bluff failed. No draw now.

Re: World Teams 2019

Ooh. McShane's game might be getting interesting again, in a good way! We should stop talking about round 9, this round isn't over yet.
