Re: Alpha Zero (redux)

Interesting article here on AlphaZero and the upcoming World Chess Championship match (between Carlsen and Caruana): Miguel Illescas previews Carlsen vs. Caruana Illescas speculates on the impact access to AlphaZero may have on the match, focusing on Caruana being American, and Google being (mostly)...

Re: 2018 World Championship in London

Interesting article here: Miguel Illescas previews Carlsen vs. Caruana Illescas speculates on the impact access to AlphaZero may have on the match, focusing on Caruana being American, and Google being (mostly) a US company. I thought I'd read somewhere that Carlsen had seen some of the AlphaZero gam...

Re: Media comments on chess

Probably worth noting that the BBC News headlines for most of the day will have been a picture of two chess pieces (pawns) in EU and UK flag colours on a chessboard, for the story ' Brexit: Cabinet meeting kicks off crucial 48 hours '. The article itself does not have the picture, so the only way to...

Re: European Club Cup 11-19 October 2018

Carlsen's game is an exciting double-edged battle, with both players now short of time.

Re: European Club Cup 11-19 October 2018

Richard Bates's game features in the Chessbase report on round 1: https://en.chessbase.com/post/euro-club-cup-2018-round-1 The fourth strongest squad in Greece is Mednyi Vsadnik from Saint Petersburg. Their 6:0 included nice wins by their two first boards, Nikita Vitiugov and Vladimir Fedoseev. Niki...

Re: European Club Cup 11-19 October 2018

Here is the win by International Director of the Welsh Chess Union (playing for White Knights Chess Club) Peter M. Bevan (1886) over IM Bogdan Podlesnik (2365). Peter Bevan (born 1952) has been rated as high as 2180 in July 1993, so not a complete surprise, but still impressive. Bogdan Podlesnik (bo...

Re: European Club Cup 11-19 October 2018

Khalifman- Speelman is the one that stands out for me for round 2. Other board pairings: Carlsen - Potkin Paravyan - Howell 3Cs have a slight edge on the top boards, and are outgraded on the bottom board. Interesting match-up for Wood Green. Grantham Sharks outgraded but have a fighting chance. Whi...

Re: European Club Cup 11-19 October 2018

The following game from Round 1 certainly was jaw dropping: Bodnaruk, Anastasia (ssh) - Gunina, Valentina (pen) ½-½ European Women Club Cup 2018 round 01 1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 Bf5 4. h4 a6 5. h5 h6 6. g4 Bd7 7. f4 c5 8. c3 e6 9. Re: Batumi Olympiad

Ummm... 8 posts up? (9 now). Indeed. And the original? Searching for the filename revealed that it came (not surprisingly) from Twitter. It was re-tweeted by the ECU (European Chess Union) from the Batumi Chess 2018 account, see here . That tweet gives a link to a high-resolution version, which I p...

The video's here and they go to Kosteniuk's game at about 5:19, though I started watching later than that.
The threefold claim occurs at 5:29:50.

Re: Batumi Olympiad

Interesting tie-break analysis in the comments to the Chessbase quick response (and closing ceremony video) to the final results. That suggests it would be more stable if all the teams were included, rather than excluding the lowest placed. Teams of comparable ranking will play comparable oppositio...

Re: Batumi Olympiad

I see what you mean about Kosteniuk's body language. There is some case to be made for admiring how Ju held it together to avoid moving her king to squares where Kosteniuk could have made a threefold repetition the following move. I think this happened twice. Can anyone say how many times the same p...

Re: Timeline for 2800 ratings

Looking at those under 25 [Carlsen and Caruana are ancient now at 27 and 26 respectively] who are rated above 2700, who It may depend on who can get the invites to elite events and whether they can survive when they get there. With question marks over FIDE's relationship with Agon possibly affectin...

Re: Batumi Olympiad

Having played through the game where Kosteniuk made an incorrect threefold repetition, I have some sympathy. She made the claim at move 83, and between moves 76 and 84 it does feel like the position might have repeated several times, but it hadn't been three times. Note that the positions after Whit...
