Adams blunders his queen. Even Gordon would have converted this against Gawain.
 I switch away from the game for a few seconds and miss that, and read it here first...

Re: British Knock out December 2018

About the semi-finals, the losers get £5000, while the finalists split the money £10,000 and £15,000, so a difference of £5000 when losing in those rounds. More money at stake than in the previous rounds. Though to maintain the pattern, the overall winner should really get £20,000.

Re: British Knock out December 2018

Ah, good point. Apropos of nothing in particular, MVL has gone to the top of the live blitz ratings, surpassing Carlsen.

Re: British Knock out December 2018

Fabi knocked out. Which keeps Carlsen's number one ranking intact for now. (yeah, I know, wrong thread.)

Re: British Knock out December 2018

Well, McShane is losing again. If Adams manages to win all four blitz games, then the playoff, and the title (against Jones), he will deserve it. Now McShane really does have one final chance to knock Adams out.

Re: 4NCL International Congress

And it indeed came to pass. The prize money was £1,250 for the players knocked out in the preliminary round. Matthew Turner was knocked out in the first round, and got this lesser amount. Simon Williams (the other qualifier) knocked out Harriet Hunt, but was then knocked out by Adams in the next rou...

Re: British Knock out December 2018

Bit cruel that the players are made to finish the matches. Howell was already out when he was defending BvR and allowed a mate. I suppose they are just providing entertainment at that point. No, wait, I still can't count. A draw would have seen him go dormie four down. The loss (blunder) knocked him...

Re: British Knock out December 2018

McShane was about to win, but has now lost.

I think he has one more chance to avoid Adams forcing a playoff.
No, he has two more chances. I'm not counting properly.

McShane going to go through. Does that make the final Howell versus McShane?

Re: London Chess Classic

I was about to say that all the games in the main event have been drawn, but after three rounds of draws (6 games), today in round 4 MVL beat Aronian, and Caruana may be about to lose to Nakamura. But this is the tiebreaks, apparently. All the classical time control games drawn, I think.

Re: Repercussions / Fallout from FIDE Elections?

All well and good you would think until you see the latest FIDE press statement today. Adding quotes to make it clearer: "Saudi Arabia CF to partner Russian CF in hosting the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship 2018 " "Given the strong relationship between the Kingdom Saudi Arabia and Russia, ...

Worthy of comment. Indeed, the whole future direction of FIDE deserves a new thread.

Re: Ignorance is Bliss

For the record, the episode of Have I Got News For You (HIGNFY): https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0btj9sy/have-i-got-news-for-you-series-56-episode-8 Chess 'coverage' is from 15:15 to 17:30 (roughly). They managed to spin it out for 2 minutes. Probably not worth getting too worked up, but stil...
