Re: Another new IM

So how is it established if James passed 2400? Does a claim need to be put to Fide to confirm it?

Re: GAMMA Reykjavik Open 2019

Why did Gawain play 37.Qb2 dropping the c4 pawn, rather than simply 37.QxQ and an equal ending?

Round 8 report and the final round pairings. Speculation is rife here that there might be a stitch up on Board 1 (those players apparently share a room) to prevent Gawain winning.
What is the scenario that would stitch it up? Does a victory for one of them give them a better tie break?

If anyone wonders if the league is competitive, all 4 of the promotion pool matches were poised at 2.5 - 2.5 with a final game in play!

Re: Transposing into historic tabiyas

I was getting a bit low on time, but as I knew I was in trouble after 37.Qc8+, should have at least checked 37.Nxg6+ which is quite an easy draw. It escaped me completely.

Re: Transposing into historic tabiyas

Hi Roger, I was out of book by about move 9. I was very impressed that you were able to (correctly) identify it as a transposition to a Bronstein game. I felt immediately after the game that 14.Kh1 was a mistake as it did not solve the problem of ..a4, leaving me with a seriously weakened queenside....

Re: Is this a win?

There are countless things that can distract a players concentration while playing. It is his responsibility to remain focused and is part of the skill of playing.
