The British Championship had made a higher than expected loss of £9.5k. Overall the ECF had made a loss of £67k compared with a forecast loss of £50k.
One idea would be to relax the strict qualifying conditions to allow weaker players to subsidise the stronger players.

Re: Dvoretsky books

Im pretty sure dvorestkys contributions to the game will be remembered far more in the future then those of a mediocre Grandmaster that most people living right now haven't heard of. Yes he will. However in July 2002 Dorfman was ranked no.77 in the world. I think calling that mediocre is somewhat o...

Re: World Youth Championships

Meanwhile, the comments on Tim Spanton's blog have become increasingly bizarre. It is very obviously teenage boys behind the comments. Now how many teenage boys (other than the subject and his friends) would a) know how to find a comments section on an obscure (sorry Tim!) chess blog. b) would have...

Re: British Championship Congress 2020

I think there should be a sort of Grand Prix qualification. It doesn't have to be complex, perhaps just accumulate x points in Opens over a predetermined period. In that context 1st May to 30th April makes more sense than 1st July to 30th June, as it would enable potential qualifiers to make travel...

Re: Tata Steel 10th-28th Jan 2020

Bogdan Lalic, who lives in Sutton, UK, informed the editors that from June 5 2006 until March 3 2007 he had played 110 games without defeat. He mentions that in that period he had a huge amout of draws (66) and improved his rating from 2480 to 2519. He had a second unbeaten run of 101 games in 2008.

Re: Membership Doppelgangers

It is probably far more likely that they have no idea what their username and/or password is, and so rather than hassle people - even if they know who to hassle - with finding out what it is, they just create a new membership and have done with it. If so, maybe an "if unsure of membership details, ...
