Re: The world's most handsome GM?

I assume that, if someone here asked "Has anyone ever been described as the world's most attractive lady GM?", this would attract instant criticism on the grounds that female players quite reasonably expect to be assessed on their merits as chess players rather than their perceived attractiveness. ...

David Watson (Northumberland) 1944-2023

https://northumberlandchess.wordpress.c ... 1944-2023/

A chap who didn't play outside the county much, but if you spent any time round these parts you will remember him as Mr. Morpeth CC.

All good as long as YOU don’t have any concerns with SOMEONE ELSE’s confidential information being manipulated by FIDE?!
I have concerns about everything FIDE do. There is a difference between a dumb piece of red tape and a threat to your life.

Re: Media comments on chess

with federations and local organisers. No, the rules apply only to high-level competitions run directly by FIDE, which is how the ECF were able to disregard them and let everyone compete as their true gender. So to the extent that the information is being "shared", it is FIDE sharing information wi...

Re: Media comments on chess

Your sentence above makes no sense. Read it again. However, if someone transitioned from male to female, and this information is publicly available from the FIDE website, I can see situations where this person could be a target when visiting a non LGTB friendly country. Of course. But it isn't. Sho...

Re: Media comments on chess

If FIDE openly shows on their rating site the detailed history of the player, how can you say "there's nothing to out"? These comments seem to me as superficial and insensitive as the FIDE regulations. Did you read the BBC piece? "If a trans player was stealth [had not disclosed their trans identit...

Re: Media comments on chess

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/67127168 A bit sloppy - Jennifer Shahade is a WGM not a GM. FIDE have not explained their decision properly. I would guess their attitude is 1) Should a 45-year-old man be allowed to win a junior prize? No 2) Should a 45-year-old man be allowed to win a senior prize? No ...

Re: If FIDE hadn't lowered the GM bar

2023: Jan-Krzysztof Duda , seat 8. Over Vidit, Praggnanandhaa, Keymer, Maghsoodloo, Wei. Somewhat slim pickings. We thought that chess was becoming a game for teenagers, but the opposite has happened: Firouzja is the only player born in the 21st century to have ever [ ~cracked the top 10~ ] finished...

As I shook Rory Bremner´s hand before leaving he told me he thought, "This is far from over."
I'm sure with you on the case, he is quite right.

Re: Chess and Pension Fraud - allegation

It's increasingly apparent to me that in the field of investments, the cardinal rule is "don't be a loser". Increase your clients' wealth, and you will be fine. Diminish it, and you must have "defrauded" them one way or another. That doesn't mean I think it would be morally justifiable to tell peopl...

Re: Chess and Pension Fraud - allegation

Blue collars go with work overalls, white collars go with suits.

I have to say: if it's true that chess players are too ready to leap to the defence of one of their own, it is truer when it's Williams than when it was Ramirez or any of the other alleged predators.

Re: Chess and Pension Fraud - allegation

If 11 people had made plans for a comfortable retirement taking the grandkids to theme parks and being a patron of the community theatre, and had seen it go up in smoke thanks to (in the most generous interpretation) my blind faith in an untested legal loophole, I hope to God it would affect my ment...

Re: How Do Pro Players Actually make money from CHESS??

There will always be people who simply don't need a full time wage for whatever reason, but I've said before (so often that Tim Wall thinks I'm aiming it at him), I think we can sustain approximately one chess professional in England, like we had at the point of the Fischer boom. It's nothing to do ...

Re: Chess and Pension Fraud - allegation

It's not just the failure to disclose the 55% tax on the "loan" that makes this a scam. If you've got £100k in a pension scheme, you've already benefited from free money from the government while you were assembling that £100k, which is given on the condition that the purpose of the pension pot is t...
