As was briefly discussed above, the nature of these awards can vary quite a lot.
A good example is Palma de Mallorca 1971, where ‘Best Game’, ‘Best Attacking Combination’, and ‘Best Endgame’ were all awarded prizes. They were judged by Harry Golombek, who had stepped in as Arbiter at short notice.

Re: DG Mackay
Indeed John. I dare say he has seen it somewhere else, and then rolled it out for the entire Volume, whether that places individual sources in contradiction or not,
Definitely not the historian's best friend, that's for sure!

Re: DG Mackay
According to Di Felice, it's DUNCAN G MACKAY - see for instance the index of his 1961-63 Volume and also the next one. There is some mention of Chess Magazine 60-61 as a possible source. Page 248, if anyone has it.

Re: Gawain Jones in European semi-final 7pm TONIGHT
Terrific result. Gawain on Twitter: "Well I didn't make it easy for myself. Thought I'd blown it when I squandered a 2-0 lead against David, such elite players don't tend to give you second chances. Got my luck in the Armageddon. Then a Dragon punt and Scotch Gambit opening trap sees me over the lin...

Re: Battle of Britain Tournaments?
1955 Sep. Battle of Britain. London ENG – LW Barden, JB Hawson, M Rogan 2/3, A Lukowicz 0 (4). It was fitting that Rogan (USA) and Lukowicz (a Polish airman) could represent two of Britain’s strongest wartime allies. Barden won out in the three-way play-off for first place.

Re: Frank Winter : can you help?
Reminds me of a friend of mine who would regularly play 1.a3 if his opponent hadn't turned up for the start of play. He would cunningly set the pawn only half onto the a3 square, leave the remaining pieces in a messy arrangement, start the clock, push his chair in and walk away. Arriving late, many ...

I think I recall William Fairhurst being made a CBE, but whether it was for chess or structural engineering, I couldn't say.

Hah! Nice one.
'Chess For Tigers' is maybe the one cover replication that shouldn't be attempted.

Re: Jonathan Penrose
Over the years I did manage to locate a couple of articles about Penrose: One is in the archives of spraggettonchess.com. I guess this link should work - http://www.spraggettonchess.com/saturdays-chess-puzzle-3/ but if not, I used the archive box, right hand side of the homepage, where I selected Ma...

Re: Harry Golombek games
Playing chess may have had a direct bearing on Harry surviving the war: “Without chess I would almost certainly be dead. My artillery battery was about to leave for Singapore during WWII. My commanding officer arranged for me to be transferred to Intelligence a week before they left because he knew ...

Re: Media comments on chess
This reminds me of a (possibly apocryphal) tale featuring John Nunn. In essence, it was told to me as follows ... "John's mother picked him up from his first day of elementary school and was called over by the teacher. She warned Mrs Nunn that they suspected John may be a slow learner, as he had sho...
