Re: Guardian Chess Column

I know this is a bit off topic, but knowing that Geoff is a great Leyton Orient fan I expect that he is pleased at Leyton Orient's promotion especially as the club now has a chairman who does not run on to the pitch and kick his team's managers. I saw Leyton Orient play at my local team Eastleigh wh...

Re: Ralph L. Barnett Memorial Tournament & Olive Chataway

I thought that Mike Wills was a major force in organising the Ralph Barnett and so it was quite a surprise when I heard that it had still been running several years after Mike retired from chess.

I in fact spoke to Mike Wills on Sunday and hope to see him when I visit Folkestone in July.

Re: Guardian Chess Column

Although it is not strictly related to the title of this thread Leonard Barden did have a definite influence on my early chess career as I learned the Scotch Gambit from one of his books and played it as white for a couple of years and appreciated the value of giving up the b and c pawns and having ...

Re: Offering draws with a blunder or dodgy move

I have known a player offer a draw when a whole queen down, although I think that in this instance the player was well under 100 playing strength and had not taken stock of the position. This season I have seen a player win a game despite being a queen for a minor piece down I think a few years ago ...

Re: ECF Grading Proposals

Since moving to a new venue by own club has increased its' membership to the extent that whereas before we were running three teams in separate divisions and struggling to keep the lower team players eligible we are now comfortably able to run four teams and are also able to cope with the restrictio...

Re: Guardian Chess Column

On the subject of chess columns I did write a chess column for the Southern Daily Echo from January 1993 until the end of last season. I submitted an article virtually every week during that time and every Southampton League result during that time appeared and before me my predecessor the late Iain...

John Drew

Although John Drew died last year and I doubt whether many people on here will have heard of him I thought I would mention his passing as not only was he Southampton League Treasurer for more than a decade, but he captained a mostly disabled team for longer than that and was usually responsible for ...

Re: Information on David Foley-Comer

As I was one of the people who was sent a private email to and have just managed to get back to the forum I thought I would reply on here. I hardly knew David at all, but I think that we were on the committee of the Middlesex Chess Association at the same time. In 1981/82 he captained a strong Wood ...

Re: Dave Rumens

I think it is amazing that less than a day after his death was announced on here it had the record number of posts for an obituary, when you consider the number of prominent players and administrators whose deaths have been announced on here. I did work at Euston Tower at the same time as Dave, but ...

Re: London Central YMCA (aka CentYMCA) Chess Club

I think that the confusion relating to Mike Wills is explained in this thread through the latter posts on page 14 and the posts on page 15.

Re: London Central YMCA (aka CentYMCA) Chess Club

Having read Gary Kenworthy's post I meant to reply earlier. As I left London in 1988 I was only around for the first year of London Central and I formed the impression that in the first year things went reasonably well, although it was generally believed we had the players to get the first team prom...

Re: Hampshire Individual Championship

There has been an amendment to the results in the Open section which was won by Tony Corkett. Second place was a tie between David Fowler and Keith Gregory, with Matt Chapman winning the Under-175 Grading Prize. I think with the pairings each case has to =be treated on its' own merits, but I have ha...

Re: Hampshire Individual Championship

I just copied down the scores of the prize winners and did not take home the results chart. However Shreyas Royal and Paul Northcott who both won prizes are both juniors. I am not exactly sure which players are juniors, but know that the brother and sister combination of Manoj and Mansa played in th...

Hampshire Individual Championship

Tony Corkett (Fareham) won the Open section of the Hampshire Individual Championship for a record 10th time, beating Marshall Thompson's record. He obtained 4.5 points from this 6 round event and finished half a point ahead of Keith Gregory (Fareham), Matt Chapman (Fareham) and David Fowler (Hamble)...

Eddie Pitt

Eddie Pitt who was Southampton Chess League Secretary in the 1980's died on October 25th having been unwell for some time. His funeral will take place at 12.30 pm at Southampton Crematorium East Chapel in case anyone is interested. Eddie took up chess after losing a leg on his first day of a new job...
