Re: Repairing DGT2010 Clocks

Corroded battery terminals from leaving batteries in is another issue. I tend to cannibalise broken clocks, replacing parts from 2 broken clocks to make one working clock. I haven't gone as far as wielding the soldering iron, but I have replaced battery holders, cleaned battery terminals with baking...

Re: How to improve digital chess clocks

I'm not sure if I've misunderstood this point, but this feature already exists on various DGT models. Could you quote the setting number, or the parameters that need to be set to enable it? On the older DGT 2000 models it was setting 12 (FIDE Rapid 60m followed by 10s per move) This setting has dis...

Re: How to improve digital chess clocks

Allow a move rate which adds increments only in the last two or five minutes. The idea of this is for Leagues or "fast" Congresses where you play all the moves in 90 minutes but wish to prevent as far as possible games overrunning their time slot whilst eliminating "unable to win" claims. I'm not s...

Re: Australian format weekend chess

Not any more. A change to the FIDE Rating regulations means that *games* that have at least one player rated 2200 or above will not be rated with 60m+30s as the time control. Previously it was *tournaments*. http://www.fide.com/fide/handbook.html?id=197&view=article has the new regulations, under se...

Re: Australian format weekend chess

This format used to be much more common in Australia, but is gradually being phased out. The story behind it is ... Australia does not have a tradition of Friday evening rounds for weekend events. This is due to the lower population density, meaning that lots of players use Friday night to travel to...

Re: Repercussions / Fallout from FIDE Elections?

ACC's main argument, that they mentioned twice in the 15 minutes I was there, was that if you take part in a boxing fight you can't then report your opponent to the police for assault afterwards, on the grounds that he'd been punching you in the face. So boxing's rules beat the national laws. The f...

Heh, Shaun reads my posts :) Not the first time I've been 'quoted' during the campaign either no booth for Nigel Insurgents don't do 'booths'. I thought everyone knew that Indeed, you were the source for quote, although I sinned by not giving you credit in the post. When describing one of my Olympi...

Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election? (Take 2)

There is of course one incredibly unlikely alternative. Assuming that no candidate receives a majority on the first ballot, how badly do the Makro and Dvorkovich tickets want to deny victory to the other side (and still be part of a winning coalition) ....

Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election? (Take 2)

A meeting of the FIDE Electoral Board on the 20/21 July said in it's minutes Where can these be found? I've been waiting for them but assumed they had not been published. I'm not sure they have been published anywhere. I was sent an excerpt from them by the Chairman of the Electoral Commission Robe...

Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election? (Take 2)

What's happened to the allegations that a lot of the campaigning isn't even legal? It turns out that the grand announcements from FIDE on this matter were shot down from within. A meeting of the FIDE Electoral Board on the 20/21 July said in it's minutes "The ELE has no direct general competence ab...

Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election? (Take 2)

Cleans Hands 4 FIDE Papua New Guinea suffered under the Kirsan/Makro/Borg regime because we openly gave our support to Kasparov presidential ticket. I was surprised to read this because I do not remember any such declaration. I am now confident that the reason for this is that it never happened, al...

Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election? (Take 2)

Now Dvorkovich or Short would be thinking that "may be" will be taken as including federations that would vote for Makro and excluding those that don't. As Roger says above Dr Siegel is part of the Makro team so he's clearly conflicted. So perfectly legitimate for Kouatly to argue what he did. As f...

Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election? (Take 2)

The Makro team seem keen on reform. http://www.fide.com/component/content/article/1-fide-news/11040-federations-cannot-be-excluded-from-elections-due-to-debts.html It had always been plausibly rumoured that at election times, debts to FIDE could be forgiven in exchange for support of the establishm...

Re: Should the FIDE voting system be reformed and if so how?

Coming from a Federation (PNG) that can be considered a 'rotten borough', reforming the voting system has always been a topic of interest for me. But before I make some suggestions it is not clear exactly what problem is being fixed. Is it simply the 'wrong' side winning elections? or is it regular ...

Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election? (Take 2)

re my comments about Tromso on the previous thread. In terms of organisation and meeting management, the Election for President may well have been the high point, even if that point wasn't very high (having three different people running the meeting at the same time was a significant issue). The oth...
