Re: ECF U19 National Schools Chess Championships final 2019

Please ignore the league tables. I am sure the full results of this event will soon be published by the organisers. ...... When I proposed that the final be expanded to 16 teams, which has been hugely successful in terms of motivating secondary school chess, Dave Welch developed a fair system for p...

Re: ECF U19 National Schools Chess Championships final 2019

I gather from other sources that City of London Boys won- congrats to them. However, I have to say I am rather confused by the format of this year's U19 final. The published rules (https://www.englishchess.org.uk/NSCC/under-19-rules-2018-19/) say it should be a 4 round swiss, and no drawn matches ar...

Re: End of season musings, part two

Roger was delighted with Matthew Wadsworth clinching the IM title in March, winning with the Reti no less, and got to relive it all in May when he - Matthew, that is - went on to clinch his first GM norm, winning with the Reti again. Roger sees his second team as a vehicle for promoting young Engli...

Re: Another new IM

To be confirmed, etc etc, but Matthew Wadsworth had three valid norms when, rated 2396, he beat Andrew Ledger on Saturday at 4NCL, so he can certainly be called IM-elect with some confidence until his title is ratified. (He seems to be playing closer to 2450+ level right now). Following Southend at...

Looks like it's all going to come down to Peter's game against Daniel! No pressure....
All over, real shame and bad luck Peter. Congrats to Oxford, and well done Cambridge for a strong performance in the context of a big rating difference.

Delighted to see Peter Finn playing and performing creditably. Hopefully he can maintain his level of performance when turning out in the Bucks League later this month.

Re: 2019 Varsity Match

Now had to leave the venue. When i left, all square with 4 games still going....all three match results possible.

(Amusingly after the first result came in, a certain GM seated in the commentary room audience was forecasting an oxford whitewash*).

*should that be bluewash?
