I'm perfectly happy for people to use this section to discuss the controversial aspects of the lives of recently deceased people.

Re: ECU General Assembly Resolution on Boycotts

My preference would be (a), then (d). If I were forced to make a decision between (b) and (c), I would sit there and let the decision time out.

Re: April Council meeting 2019

If someone gave me £800 and said I had to spend it on something to benefit chess in this country, I'd spend it on booking accommodation for titled players at Paignton. (I use Paignton as an example because that's the norm tournament I'm organizing.)

Re: FIDE Senior Championships 2019

Re: FIDE Senior Championships 2019

I haven't heard it mentioned that there were any. Certainly Terry was in with a good shout for an IM norm for much of the event. Am I right in thinking he would have been allowed to discard his win against the low rated opponent from round 2? In the end, again discounting that game, Terry scored 4....

Re: ECF Grading Proposals

FIDE-rated Opens are common. FIDE-rated sections with an upper rating limit, which is where the problems lie, are less common.

Indeed. The Premier section is now 9 rounds rather than 7, with two rounds on 1st September.

The Paris event was 1924, not 1932.

Re: ECU General Assembly Resolution on Boycotts

Jack - The opportunity was there, but she didn't get enough points. That happens all the time. I believe we have an Engish player who has plentry of norms, but has never managed to reach 2400. More than one - Sowray, Richardson and Jackson are three that I know of. Not getting enough points happens...

Re: ECU General Assembly Resolution on Boycotts

It took me 25 years, but I eventually got the QC rules for title norms amended to be more user-friendly. It would be very, very rare now for a player to be unable to get a norm in Britain because he did not get the correct mix or zverage rating of opponents. The last example I can think of where a ...

It wouldn't have been James's first norm, no. I remember his beating me on the way to getting one a few years ago.

You corrected the move before pressing the clock, so the illegal move penalty is not applicable.

Re: British Chess Champions of the past

There's one error I can spot on that list - the 2012 actual winners should have Stephen Gordon in brackets.

Re: Media comments on chess

the argument ended in stalemate - la discussion s'est terminée dans une impasse The trouble is that Larousse is trying to translate into French a sentence which has no meaning in the original English, at least not that I can see. I have some friends who are professional translators. They consistent...
