Re: Remembering CGM Keith Richardson (02-ii-1942 10-iv-2017)

Sounds unusual, yes. The usual explanations for such a phenomenon would be that he had just recently joined the club, or some other strong player had recently left it.

Your being out by one is surprising; I'd expect being out by two to be much more likely.

Re: Under Statement?

If 1793 were too early, your timescale would be very tight, because Philidor died in 1795.

(You might want to check for "Danican" as well; it may be he was using that as his surname.)

Re: Something for a rainy Sunday?

(It's not like, say, getting good at cooking, which rewards you most days; you'd probably be getting good at making chess sets to make one chess set.)

Re: The ACO is back!

I'm not sure that "parasitical" really makes sense for something like a rating system; you don't in any meaningful sense use up FIDE's resources by using its ratings for your tournament.

Re: The English Language

I think it's something like this: The people of Western Europe and other places with similar modes of thought (such as the USA) have historically had a particular way of thinking about Asia, Africa and Latin America; that way of thinking has led naturally to the current conception of those regions a...

Ah yes, I've seen bits of that show. It distinguishes between wrong answers and impossible answers (the latter of which can't possibly be right because they don't meet a criterion specified in the question).

It varies both by county and by region, I think - WECU never had an U-175 competition.

Re: Chess Book Trivia Question 1

Kupreichik won five games and still finished outright last? That must be pretty rare.
