GM / IM Norm Event in February 2019

I am planning a norm event in February half term 2019, somewhere between 10th and 20th of February. I have a kind sponsor who has given me some help to get this off the ground. The primary aim is to invite all the UK players looking for norms, plus some titled players from abroad. I now need a venue...

Re: ECF increased membership costs

Organisers, and to a great extent clubs, are promoting the ECF membership scheme and in most cases are just collecting revenue for the ECF and passing it on. The ECF does not send any literature about their membership scheme to me to display at events. One organiser I know deals with this by chargin...

Re: FIDE Arbiter Sought

Thanks David - can you give me simple instructions for the JCI IRO on how Jersey should get someone registered?

Re: FIDE Arbiter Sought

Paul - my wife is a 'licensed arbiter' for Jersey. Nevertheless the ECF told me to remove her from a tournament registration as she was not an ECF arbiter as well! So I would be careful with the definition of 'licensed'.

Re: 2018 World Championship in London

Why not just go around the corner to The Plough and enjoy live commentary and more from Simon Williams?

This discussion reminds me about the argument over fielding players in the order of "current playing strength"

Re: 4ncl Congress Entry Conditions Change

Hampstead is Under 2200 (any non FIDE rated player with an ECF over 200 could play, and they have) Under 1900 and Under 160 (=if you have an ECF standard grade then you must be both) ECF Under 135 (don't care what the FIDE is if they have an ECF standard grade) this is because several players who we...

Re: 4ncl Congress Entry Conditions Change

A better solution all round would be to have an Elo system that had an equivalence to the FIDE Elos, so you don't need a conversion formula at all. But you'd still have players with an ECF Elo rating and a FIDE Elo rating that were different (even in the event that the average of the two ratings ac...

Re: Director of Women's Chess

I am getting more women playing in my events than ever before. I am not sure this is because of anything specific I have done (though the new Golders Green venue gets a lot of nice feedback), I suspect it is because junior chess in general is thriving in the SE, and also because there are a lot of g...

Re: The DeMontford Bell Kings Place Chess Festival

This year's 6th event is shaping up to be really strong! You can see a preview of the tournaments at www.twitch.tv/adamraoof where I talk about the favourite Luke McShane and the lunchtime concert by Petr Limonov which will be a new departure for me. Petr has said that he will stay on stage to do a ...

Re: Tournament Structures

My suggestion for an inclusive chess tournament would be to adopt the McMahon system by setting grade bands of 20 ECF rating points. This means that all players have competitive games right from the first round and those that keep winning get the chance to play up and meet stronger players. By the ...
