Re: UK CHESS CHALLENGE

1. On arrival, my son, and along with another member of his school, was put in with an older age group on the grounds that there were insufficient players in his section... do people find it a reasonable way of operating? 2. My son, on being offered a draw in the last round, was told by a controlle...

Re: National Schools Championship 2011-12

The secondary schools in Yeovil are all 11-16, so my limited experience would also suggest 11 as a logical point for the split. There is already a national U11 (and U9) schools tournament that 200+ teams enter each year. It is run by Tony Corfe on behalf of EPSCA, with semi-finals held at Pontins a...

Re: National Schools Championship 2011-12

I'm pleased to announce that Yateley Manor School will be continuing the sponsorship of the above event for 2011/12. What do people think of the age-handicapping system? I am not sure I like it too much. Primary school sides have become much stronger in the last ten years. I think I would prefer a ...

Re: National Schools Championships 2010-11

According to the SCCU website, "This year's entry ... was a disappointing 148 teams, rising to 153 with the appearance of new teams in the Last Chance Saloons." Do we know which schools that normally enter were not able to (for any reason) this year? What are the entry number for the last few years...

That's a nice map, but why the different colour pins and one club represented by a car?

Re: National Schools Championships 2010-11

The finalists are almost all decided. So far Manchester Grammar and RGS Guildford have qualified for the finals in July. I know that Reading School beat Dr Challoner's tonight to also book a place (I'm sure it wasn't deliberate, but these were the last two state schools in the championship, so by pl...

Re: Voting systems

The latest three opinion polls on this have all shown FPTP 58 AV 42 according to the YouGov website. So despite the support it's receiving here, it looks unlikely to win. The "smart money" has always been on the no side of this debate. The bookies always knew that once the Murdoch press started to ...

It's great to see the return of a national girls competition, but when will we know the dates and locations (personal interest: South)?

Re: Berks Junior Chess

It was hacked on New Year's Eve with a Rick Astley video added to the home page (which I can live with), and an unpleasant email newsletter sent to all parents and some juniors (I'm rather less sanguine about this). I need to bring the security up to commercial standards which will take a little tim...

Re: Terafinal/Challengers 2010

I guess most people are interested in seeing the Terafinal proper results, so it makes sense to post those as soon as possible. Also, isn't the Challengers a much bigger tournament (since more than twice as many children qualify - anyone who finished 2nd or 3rd, including equal places). Yes - there...
