Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election? (Take 2)

Of course, I understand why the ECF Board decided to go along with the presumed wishes of HMG, which may perhaps have been imparted to some of them, but isn't that what the Israeli federation is in the line for expulsion for even allegedly thinking about doing? Where would you draw the line, Nick? ...

Re: London chess classic

I know a bit more than everyone here, but it's information I don't regard myself as being at liberty to disclose. However, you're all going to be disappointed with how mundane the reason is, unless you're the sort of person who gets excited by competition formats. As a person who does get excited b...

Two places, eh? Either they have been listening to the crowds about Rowson, or Short and Malcolm have unaccountably fallen out over something or other.
There were 2 qualifiers in 2016 so just reverting to that system?

Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election? (Take 2)

Nick, sincere apologies. No need, but I am still not certain that I understand. I think you are suggesting that, if both candidates are considered unacceptable, it would be better to abstain, one way or another. Unfortunately, one of them is going to be the next FIDE President, so is it best for th...

Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election? (Take 2)

Do they actually need to decide? Yes, they certainly do. Abstaining from the main event, either by actually doing so or by voting for Short in the second round, is one of three options. Nick, maybe I disagree. The ECF may have a reputational risk , with among others potential chess sponsors. Support...

Re: World Junior 5 to 16 September 2018

Looks like Matthew has recovered to put in a decent performance by rating, having played the almost certain winner in the first round

Ravi not faring as well, possibly too many draws

Let's hope they both finish well in the final 2 rounds

Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election? (Take 2)

It's all kicking off! Makropoulos has begun heavy shelling of Dvorkovich's position. He's seeking to have his main opponent banned via a joint Makro-Pein referral to the FIDE & IOC Ethics Committee for egregious malfeasance of varying kinds. Dvorkovich meanwhile has laid down his own carpet-bombing...

Just as an aside, does anybody else find Garry Kasparov's apparent lack of interest in the contest surprising? I wonder if any journalists will ask him about it in the course of his Chess960 match.
Presumably an endorsement from Kasparov would be enough to sink a candidate's chances of winning

Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election? (Take 2)

Of course, things start to get tricky if Dvorkovich starts to claim 94+ votes. Will he honour his vows to Short then? No need to speculate on a Makro-Short alliance in any event: that will never happen Dvorkovich claims that he has visited 95 federations, at least twice. However, in a response to a...
