Re: Tournament Structures

I think I've concluded that seeding 128 players in a 128-player knockout doesn't work from a "fairness" perspective, with the possible caveat that it works if you re-seed after each round; so the highest remaining seed plays the lowest remaining seed in each round, a bit like the NFL playoffs. I se...

Re: Media comments on chess

Interesting
In 1968 I played for the English students' team at Ybbs, Austria where I made a modest plus score. However, the team dynamics were just terrible and, by the end of the tournament, hardly any two members were on speaking terms.

Re: Tournament Structures

Wimbledon also ignored the world rankings when they felt like it. Everyone else just used the world rankings, but Wimbledon said "Lendl? Can't play on grass, we're not making him no. 1!" Eventually they fell into line...This is not really a factor in chess of course. Wimbledon still does that, to t...

Re: GRENKE Chess Classic 2018

Impressive from Caruana, who must have been tired after the Candidates; he moves back up to number 2 in the live ratings prior to the US Championship which is 18-30 April

Busy month: Carlsen plays 18-28 April at Gashimov Memorial with Shak, Ding, Vlad, Giri, Karjakin, Topalov, Radjabov, Mamedov

Re: FIDE internal fighting

When Andrew Paulson wanted to join Azmai's ticket he ran into an absolute firestorm - that was when Danailov was the ECF favourite and Azmai the devil incarnate. How things change. I doubt the allegations of rating fraud, taking moves back and head butting will be entirely forgotten. Is there likel...

Re: Victory for the Dinosaurs

However surely allowing counties to shop around for hired guns makes a mockery of having a COUNTIES championship and doesn't exactly level up the playing field. Yorkshire have vastly more players than Bucks. On the one occasion we met, arguably Yorks employed a very dubious board order. https://www...

Re: Tournament Structures

I've read most of this thread with interest, but held off my thoughts until now. I think we need to think about the weekend tournament in general. England has lots of them, but hardly any 9-round Open tournaments compared to other countries in the rest of Europe and beyond. Ideally, they would be 1...

Re: GRENKE Chess Classic 2018

Sorry, was editing my post while you were posting Chris

Caruana is currently rated 2804 on the FIDE rating list; his current live rating is 2808; he lost 1.8 by drawing yesterday

Re: GRENKE Chess Classic 2018

As Topalov was rated 2813 when he lost, and was world number 1 too, then that's higher than Caruana is at present (either 2804 or a live rating of 2809.8 when he sat down to play Hou Yifan) in terms of rating or ranking

Re: Tournament Structures

Organising congresses can be hard work (as you have to deal with chess players, who are very often hard work  ) The object is to make a profit, or at least break even; it is easy for those not risking their own money to criticise those that do (we made a small profit most years at Bury, but wer...

Re: Victory for the Dinosaurs

Can I enlarge on Alex's reply about the MCCU Counties Championship? The situation in 2010/11 was as quoted but by 2012/3 the number of entrants to the Open Section had fallen to two (Warwickshire and Staffordshire) and by 2013 just one (Staffordshire). The MCCU website states:- Seasons 2013-6. Ther...

Re: Victory for the Dinosaurs

We know that some counties would struggle to field 16 boards in county matches, but might be able to field 12; do we actually know that they would enter a team in the national stages if it were reduced from 16 to 12? I'm thinking for example of Cumbria, which can manage 12 boards for matches in the ...
