Re: Remembering BH Wood MSc FCS OBE (13-vii-1909 04-iv-1989)

Baruch Harald Wood looms large in British Chess History. Managed to keep his magazine in production throughout the Second World War, after being ordered into War Work, as an Industrial Chemist. Of course, he had the support of his wife, Peggy. Full of praise for Alexander Alekhine, before the War, f...

Re: Brian Heath

Good to see Brian A Heath on the ECF List of Obituaries. Brian joined the Newport (Wales) club in 1961/62. He was an Industrial Chemist, employed by Monsanto, Newport, in his early years, and later joined Suflex in Pontyminster. He was a regular player for our First Team for several years, and parti...

Re: Worrying times

It's hard to imagine everything returning to normal. (what ever that was?) When I first heard of the ibuprofen rumours I was thinking this was government spread because stupid people with the virus use it to lower their temperature so they can get past the first stage of screening. I'd like to thin...

Re: Worrying times

Was thinking BBC should cancel all these repeated cookery, make over, buy antiques programs and put on basic educational programmes instead. There will be 100's in archives. Recall Bob Hoskins doing one on basic maths. Take Care. You mean yer actual Bob Hoskins ? Must indeed be the End. The program...

Re: Chess-playing Fellows of Royal Society

... If the weather is too cold or too rainy, I take refuge in the Regency Café. I like to watch the games of chess. The best chess players in the world are in Paris, and the best players in Paris are in the Regency Café. Here, in Rey's establishment, they battle it out--Legal the Profound, Philidor...

Re: Chess-playing Fellows of Royal Society

In London during the 18th century, it was the Fellows of the Royal Academy that established the Chess Club, in St James Street. They employed one Francois Andre Danican Philidor as their chess coach, bringing him over from Paris, for the Season. It was George Atwood who insisted on games being recor...

Re: Chess-playing Fellows of Royal Society

One name I don't think I've seen mentioned in this forum, although he's sufficiently well-known that this is probably due to lack of rigour on my part, is that of Dr Jacob Bronowski, a polymath probably best remembered for "The Ascent of Man" and a member inter alia of the Royal Society of Literatu...

Re: Chess Matches

I have been reading a bit about chess in the late 19th century. There was a postal match during that time when England beat Scotland and the Scotch opening was played. Does anyone know the year? I would also like to know when people think the first international match was. Would it be the 1932 Olym...

Re: Ralph L. Barnett Memorial Tournament & Olive Chataway

Ralph Ladislas Barnett (1911-1976) lived in Hayes, Middx. He played chess for Middlesex and EMI (in the Middlesex League) between about 1930 and 1960. He was awarded an MBE in the 1967 Birthday Honours List. (Citation: Location Manager, Electric & Musical Industries Electronics Ltd.) I'd imagine he...

Re: Eric Schiller 1955-2018

Sorry to hear about Eric's passing. I only met him the once and immediately got the impression that he was very likeable but a bit of a character. A bit of a funny story. It was back in the early 90's in one of the half hour open tournaments that was run by the goodwin brothers? that regularly had ...

A man who was loved and detested by all who knew him. He receives praise on this Forum, but switch to facebook Chess Book Collectors, and you get a completely different image of Eric Schiller.

Re: Brian Gillman

The bulk of the sets of pieces are of Staunton pattern, triple weighted in presentation boxes / cases. There are two top quality BCM sets I guess from the 1970s / 1980s when Brian Reilly was at the helm. If anyone is interested in making serious offers then I will pass the contact details on. J. Do...
