Early in the thread it was suggested that Israelis should be barred because they refuse to play against Arabs or Iranians.

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2019 - Isle of Man

Maybe there’s an argument that you should get to include your own rating in the calculation, akin to category norms under old title regulations. I don’t see that this tie break is so terrible - why shouldn’t high performance be a determining factor?

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2019 - Isle of Man

Do you think it's Carlsen per se, though, or just it's really hard to finish off chess games against much better players? It's not like (say) football where if you have a lead you can hang on to it: in chess you nearly always have to find something. I often find it striking how rately much lower-ra...

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2019 - Isle of Man

Carlsen just seems to have a way to make his opponents play like babies. I hope Kovalev doesn't go back to his room and hang himself. Do you think it's Carlsen per se, though, or just it's really hard to finish off chess games against much better players? It's not like (say) football where if you h...

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2019 - Isle of Man

What criteria are used, or what criteria could be used? ;)

If the former, generally power of assertion, if the latter... well, perhaps you could think of some? ;)

Re: End of an era

Luke McShane first had a weekly chess column at a very, very young age. Indeed he may well have been thr youngest-ever regular columnist. It was in, I think, the Sunday Mail. Once at Hastings, the sub-editor rang urgently to make contact with Luke for him to give the blessing for the column. She sa...

Re: End of an era

or Mike Gatting's technique for making a relatively trivial catch look good for the cameras. How dare you!? I was watching it live, which I'm pretty sure you weren't, and it was a brilliant catch. I have seen the video though, which has been shown from time-to-time whenever there's about to be an A...

Re: FIDE Open London Chess Classic

Presumably it makes a difference in “standard” UK tournaments where you can offer repairing and participants are generally keen.

Re: FIDE Open London Chess Classic

It is. You can now enter the tournament here 28th October is a date to be aware of, it's when the entry fee goes up. The other deadline is the Thursday afternoon before the tournament where contrary to normal UK practice, the organisers are expecting an email to "register" for the FIDE Open or you ...

Re: Would You Pay Extra to Win Prize Money?

(I'd go for the £19 entry fee, but then I'd normally fancy my chances of winning the £130.) Jack puts his finger on the problem with this format. I would want to pay the extra, because it feels like the right thing to do, but if I thought Jack was playing I would wonder whether I really like him en...

Re: Results of the ECF 2018/9 Grand Prix

Primarily/historically they exist because there are no separate championship events for them ie. the prizes only appeared when the previous running of separate Championship events was discontinued (U18 was still separate as recently as the late 90s). As some may predate the professional era it may b...

Re: Results of the ECF 2018/9 Grand Prix

Off topic but on the basis that the GP will continue@, and anticipating that there may be some prizes for it at some future date, I personally believe the rules should be tweaked in the over 180 section to at least limit the number of results that can be counted from “non Open” events. At the moment...

Re: Results of the ECF 2018/9 Grand Prix

If you include both tournaments with byes/defaults you get to 681. If you then exclude Paignton and include London classic you get to 663. If you look at the “Events Received” page, Paignton, for some reason, is not shown as a Congress, but as a “League etc”. I would hazard a guess that this is the ...
