Re: Altibox Norway 2019 - the future of chess?

If the point of the Armageddon is to influence the chess in the main tournament *in a positive way* then they’ve got it back to front. What they should have done is have the Armageddon only after games with a decisive result, a second opportunity for any defeated player, if you like. Eg. Players dra...

Re: You Think English Juniors are Underrated ...

I'm fully aware of it - I played him at Kingston recently and he wiped me off the board! (OK until he blundered into a mate in two at the end but a mere technicality!)

Re: You Think English Juniors are Underrated ...

I noticed many juniors scoring very well in the recent 4ncl Basingstoke congress, U2050 section. Out of 17 juniors born 2006 or later. 14 gained rating points. The average rating gain of the 17 was 32 points. Not to mention the 12 year old Middlesex junior from Harrow who beat Mark Hebden. And I re...

Charlie!! ...not again! Lol I just went off his recent Chessbase interview when he said two ...although to be fair he does say one is not yet official. 'CB: The Sniper brought you success, didn’t it? CS: Considering I am a humble FM with two IM norms — one of which is under dispute! It is amazing I...

Re: New International Junior Chess Organisation for Great Britain

It seems strange to blame Chess-results when all they are doing is showing the performance in accordance with FIDE regulations. There are no such regulations. (subject to the additional rating floor for the weakest opponent dependent on the norm category you are focussing on) Without which the calc...

Re: New International Junior Chess Organisation for Great Britain

Currently in joint 20th on 4.5/7 with a 2368 TRP I find Chess Results TPRs unsatisfactory, and Charlie's performance is obviously much better than that. He has scored 50% against 5 GMs, average rating >2450, so presumably TPR >2450, and has in addition beaten two weaker opponents, which should at w...

Re: Think not what the ECF can do for you, but what you can do for the ECF

Hmmm? Didn't I play in a GM norm tournament you organised in Stoke on Trent? Birmingham - luxury I didn't organise that one but I do remember the majority of the players crashing at my place on the Saturday night  I vaguely remember a story about you having a few drinks that night... Also reca...

Re: 2019-20 Season

Since the purpose of the rule is to prevent weaker team being artificially strengthened with “higher team” players, not to prevent lower teams from filling gaps above in emergencies, the solution might be to amend the rules and simply focus on the composition of team in the first (November) weekend....

Re: End of season, snapshots of gloom, part four

I was once 'enquired about' ten minutes after my team had got relegated, as a result of me losing a 7 hour 90+ move game, against a player from the team from which the subsequent enquiry was made ... ;)

Mentioning no names... :)

Re: Think not what the ECF can do for you, but what you can do for the ECF

I’m speculating, but I suspect that the opposition to revealing amounts spent on appearance fees (even on a gross basis) is not actually primarily because of a concern that it would lead to claims from external observers that they are too high and should be cut. Possibly more likely is that the play...

Re: End of season round-up, part three

Ok fair enough. Forgot my no1 rule (breached numerous times). Don’t post late at night about things I don’t know about... It is certainly true that (whatever the apparent difficulties of doing otherwise) the 4ncl tardiness in finalising dates when so many other organisers try to work around them is ...

Re: End of season round-up, part three

Anyway on to next season with Andy back should hopefully make us safe again, only if they sort out the Euro Club clash the first weekend next season; because at the moment we will be entering that and having to miss the first weekend Is that not dependent on 4NCL(/ECF?) nominating you which they ma...
