On a related note, did Gawain's opponent just accept a draw offer that he really didn't ought to have done?
Probably not, if I am reading the clock times correctly and remembering that he is human!

This is all a bit Eighties Revival
Apparently Botvinnik approached Kasparov during that game v Sokolov at Belfort, not having seen the opening, and asked him which line of the Open Sicilian had Sokolov played?

Re: World Cup Knockout 2019

I am rather pleased at this. Partly because it maintains the Ding momentum. He has been off colour most of the event (except in the classical game v Grischuk) and still looks likely to win it! So this maintains the promise of an intriguing 2020 title match; and we know now that he might (might) have...

Re: World Cup Knockout 2019

I hate to criticize MVL as he is a lot better than me, and I may be talking complete rubbish, but Nxc3 doesn't look the principled move Didn't it get played in some Carlsen games, or am I making that up? It's not exchanging queens that looked odd to me. something certainly went wrong quite quickly,...

Re: World Cup Knockout 2019

A pity for Aronian but both players seem likeable and one of these players has perhaps played enough Candidates', while the other hasn't played one.

Re: World Cup Knockout 2019

Ding is tired, eh - but that game could have been played by Carlsen in one of his best events.

Interesting times ahead in 2020.

Re: World Cup Knockout 2019

arguably the four strongest are playing each other in QF; though no one is here by accident and Yu Yangyi looks like a real dark horse.

(Dark horse! Where does that phrase come from?)

Re: World Cup Knockout 2019

Radjabov's victory is only a slight surprise, if a surprise at all, to those who subscribe to the theory, so often bore out in practice, that when friends/close countrymen meet, the underdog does well.

Re: World Cup Knockout 2019

interesting way to draw though - the knight is just stuck on a5!

reminds me of various blitz games with Daniel Fernandez, where I might start with an extra piece or exchange from the opening, but ...

Re: World Cup Knockout 2019

becoming clear that Ding will live after all

He has been far from his best so far, and a shadow of the player he was at the last World Cup - still someone will have to find a way to beat him. I would not expect him to go out by drawing with White in an Armageddon!

Domínguez maybe
very probably. I liked Grischuk's position for a long time, probably rightly, but didn't notice that he had been about an hour behind on the clock for most of the game!

Re: World Cup Knockout 2019

The prospect of his losing (still not a done deal, I hasten to add) is welcomed on Chessbomb comments because ... it would probably prevent Giri from reaching the Candidates!!
