Re: Tromso World Cup 2013

Yes, I haven't heard the post-game comments, but I suspect Kamsky must have seen that his Rb8-b2 plan was quite forcing, even if he hadn't analysed it all the way through. If he saw as far as picking up the White rook on c1, I suspect that would have been good enough to convince him. Nakamura looks ...

Re: Tromso World Cup 2013

Mamedyarov-Kamsky after move 14 has apparently got Houdini in a twist: http://www.chessworldcup2013.com/live This is Houdini's current PV: 15.Nxc3 Rh8 16.Rxh8 Qxh8 17.e5 Nd7 18.d6 e6 19.Qb1 Qb1+ (wait, what? Isn't Black's queen on h8?) 20.Qb1 (Uhh... when did White get two queens?) Bb7 21.Rxb1 (Hold...

Re: Draw by repetition claims

Gosh! I must be doing all sorts of illegal things at the chess board then! You certainly are, David, but it may console you to know that you aren't the only offender. I've experienced that even strong players can be guilty of breaking the rule about note-taking: I recently played against a young Sw...

Re: Junior squad/Kasparov simul in 1986

I think that the original invitees were all over 200... Really? Were there that many members of the British junior squad in 1986 who were over 200? Chesstempo only has Kasparov's game against Mickey from the simul, here: http://chesstempo.com/gamedb/game/286136 and Mickey was 2295 at the time, but ...

Re: Junior squad/Kasparov simul in 1986

I'm wondering more what Black's invisible moves are: White has clearly played 8 moves: d4, c4, b3, g3, Qc2, Nf3, Bg2 and O-O, and is considering his 9th (both because of Kasparov's expression, and because it's a simul). Black has equally clearly played 6 moves : d5, e6, c6, Nf6, Be7 and O-O, and app...

Re: Can you put a value on a game of chess?

Okay, so you've said Black is 170-180, but as we can see, well booked up. In game 2, his/her Sveshnikov is pretty sound, though 12...O-O has a better reputation than 12... Rb8 these days (the b-pawn is not really en prise for a couple of moves, at least not with any hope of White emerging from the o...

Re: Draw by repetition claims

My personal record is 10 moves, in the following game: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1483146 My GM opponent hadn't noticed, but fairly half-heartedly contested the claim, as Black should have few difficulties holding the draw in any case. We were using those Monroi devices to record, ...

Re: French Cheating Case

Marzolo also played in the same tournament as I did in San Sebastian in April. He did rather well , despite the final round loss, finishing in 8th place and gaining 13 rating points. Indeed, a draw in the last round would appear to have been just enough for a GM norm, given that his round 1 opponent...

Re: Too many sections in the County Championships?

When was it reduced to 16? BCF either 1987-88 or 1988-89, SCCU sometime between 1995-96 and 1999-2000. I'll try to narrow it down for you. SCCU reduced to 16 boards in the 1996/7 season. I thought I vaguely recalled it being in the middle of my time at university (1994-98), but had to check the SCC...

Re: Another one flies the coop

I have now followed the example of my Barbican colleague GM Turner, and transferred affiliation from England, though in my case to Norway rather than Scotland. You might want to tell us how it works in Norway. I believe you have to be a registered member of a local club to play in the domestic team...

Another one flies the coop

I have now followed the example of my Barbican colleague GM Turner, and transferred affiliation from England, though in my case to Norway rather than Scotland. My departure is not primarily motivated by the various debatable policies that are being pursued, but the fact that I now (and for the forse...

In other words, the probability of meeting 7 Frenchmen and 2 non-Frenchmen is 0.160 (3dp). Even in a metropolitan city there can easily be a sixteen or so percent chance that you will in any event fall foul of the foreigner rule... A point to note is that Alex's probability is that of meeting *exac...

I wonder if I am one of his opponents in the "In 1988 I set the new world record for the most simultaneous correspondence chess games, playing 1300 games at one time." <snip> Regardless of that, how could he possibly know that no-one else has played more than 1300 games simultaneously, other than i...

Re: Mind Sports Olympiad

Do they publish somewhere their title regulations? Perhaps it is an answer to Stan Vaughan in USA. http://stanvaughan.com/default.aspx for anyone who's interested. Thanks for bringing Stan Vaughan to my attention. Can't think how I haven't come across him before. I spent a very illuminating and ent...
