Illegal move penalties

It’s great that OTB chess is back!! I recently played a game which I lost disappointingly. I felt like I was playing stronger than my usual level despite being a tad unwell. The manner in which I lost has lead me to raise questions on my finishing and pressure handling ability but also the fairness ...

Re: 1st Brainstormchess weekender 23-24 Feb + 11th Brainstormchess FIDE blitz

If the increment is only 10 seconds, you might want to reconsider the requirement that players must record all the moves. With the increment I think it is fair for all moves to be recorded during play. I appreciate that all players may not agree. I will be opening a number of polls to help form pop...

Re: 4 round FIDE weekenders?

I'm not sure I'd want to play in one, but they'd be an excellent opportunity for testing out a pairing system I've worked on. Thanks Jack. Why not? The main reasons that I could think of are the increased possibility for tying for prize money and not getting the opportunity of earning as many FIDE ...

4 round FIDE weekenders?

As a chess organizer one of the difficulties I sometimes experience is venue availability. Of course it's impossible to please everybody but it's nice to cater for players of all abilities. I've had a couple of people suggest running a 4 round FIDE weekenders over Saturday and Sunday. I've also been...

Re: 1st Brainstormchess weekender 23-24 Feb + 11th Brainstormchess FIDE blitz

Thank you Roger for pointing out the practicalities of the time control/schedule. Indeed the time controls have now been changed to 75 +10. I will ensure to the best extent I can that all are aware. The event has been put up very late so I appreciate it may clash with other events/arrangements peopl...

Re: Distractive spectators/penalties

I have to admit I found the YouTube video funny! But getting back to the point, needless distractions cost game points. Distractions outside the playing area may not be preventable. If player A's phone was to go off then player A would rightly be penalised as this would cause a distraction. If playe...

Re: Distractive spectators/penalties

In one case there was a person tapping away to send a text. But the nature of intent is not so relevant in my opinion. Although calling the arbiter or organiser over in such a situation would be logical, the perfect scenario would be not needing to say anything. Fortunately in some events spectating...

Distractive spectators/penalties

Most chess players in the competitive circuit are familiar with the strict rules. Violation of certain rules can result in losing the game. I was just wondering if there are rules or penalties for spectators and if there are if the rules are exercised as often as they should be? On a couple of occas...

Re: Zero move game: should it be graded?

Grades and ratings are meant to represent playing strength. Fixed draws do not do ratings any justice and I think some action should be taken against such agreements.

Re: Attention Congress Players

Sadly for me I have not entered any e2e4 events recently. I find the whole idea of playing in these events attractive but less affordable now than before. Hopefully I will be able to enter one again soon. Fortunately I have been able to play in some local events over the year which are becoming more...
